I opened my eyes, the freezing air causing me to curl into myself. The overgrown building I had fallen asleep on now had a slight covering of powdery snow. I slowly sat up, moving my only possession, a messenger bag, off of my chest. The ever-ringing sirens had grown quiet. Someone had probably figured out how to turn them off, then. I smiled. I stood up, hearing a snap of a branch.

"Who's there?" I snarl. "I have a weapon!" In reality, my 'weapon' was more of a sharp butter knife. "Calm down, Vera, it's just me."

"Rayna! I told you not to do that!" Rayna Thomas, my traveling partner, came around the corner of the building. They flashed a smile and offered me a bag. "Oh, shush. There's some food in there. How'd you sleep?" I eagerly ripped open the bag, finding slightly-stale food, and put some in my bag, giving the rest to Rayna.

"Meh. The sirens are gone." The sirens had gone on for months, right after the escapes. The largest criminal gangs in each country had taken over the government, and now the entire world was burning. The United States was in ruins, completely overrun by criminal groups. The UK wasn't in a better place. Everywhere you looked, there was something that was illegal going on. Rayna and I had been traveling when it started.

"Yeah. They stopped about an hour ago. I gotta tell you, though, getting food is getting harder. The PR is hoarding everything." The People's Resistance, otherwise known as The PR, has been resisting the new leader of the UK, Nyx. No one knows who they are. All we know is that they lead the biggest criminal group in Europe, and decided they wanted the United Kingdom. I grimaced, hearing gunshots in the distance. "I don't think we can stay here much longer. All of the gangs seem to group here." I mutter. Rayna nods. "Nyx wants this area, too."

A shouting match had started near the building we were on top of. "The People's Resistance will save us! We put trust in them and they give us freedom!" More gunshots. Stray bullets flew toward us. Rayna pulled me down, us barely dodging one. "We need to go. Now." I whispered. We grabbed everything, which wasn't much, shoving it into the few bags we had. Rayna and I ran towards the fire escape on the side of the building, as a shooting match started on the opposite side of the building.

As soon as my feet hit the ground, Rayna and I ran into what used to be the more populated area. While we were running, we heard footsteps behind us. "It... seems like... we've.. attracted attention!" I panted. The uneven roads weren't the best for running on, but we had no choice. Whoever was chasing us was not giving up. Rayna dug into their bag, searching for something. "What are you doing, Rayna?" They spun around, pulling a short knife from their bag. I realized the second they spun, and I pulled my knife out, too.
