Chapter Twenty-two: Junkyard Showdown

Start from the beginning

"I'm sorry," he apologies. "I thought it was good advice-" "It's not." "You don't know what I told him-" "I bet it was something along the lines of...show girls we don't care. It drives them nuts." Steve furrows his eyebrows at her. "Y-yeah, actually it was."

Jessica turns to her brother. "Dusty, don't follow his advice. Girls actually like it when guys care about them." "I care about you," Steve tells her. "I do. I was just giving him advice on how I got girls before we got together." Jessica turns to Steve and places a hand on his shoulder. "And how did those other girls work out for you?"

"Not well."

Jessica takes her hand off Steve's shoulder. "And I rest my case." She turns her body to Dustin. "Look, Dusty. Just show Max that you care about her-" "I don't," Dustin mumbled. Behind Jessica, Steve winks at Dustin making him stop pacing. "Why are you winking, Steve?" Jessica turns to Steve who stops. "Don't wink. The love advice you gave my little brother is horrible."

"Okay, maybe I was wrong."

"Completely wrong," Jessica tells him.

Suddenly, a screech sounded throughout the bus, making Dustin, Jessica and Steve jump up and look out the window. Steve's eyes scan the junkyard. "You see him?" he asks the Henderson siblings. "No," answer in unison.

Dustin looks up at the opening of the bus. "Lucas, what's going on?" "Hold on!" The three waited for Lucas since he had eyes on the scene. "I've got eyes! Ten o'clock! Ten o'clock!" Steve looks ahead, spotting movement. "There." Jessica follows his eyesight. "What's he doing?" Dustin asks. "I don't know," Jessica answers.

"He's not taking the bait. Why is he not taking the bait?" Steve asks the two. Dustin shrugs. "Maybe he's not hungry?" Steve tilts his head. "Maybe he's sick of cow."

Steve steps back, the movement capturing both Jessica and Dustin's attention. "Steve? Steve, what are you doing?" Jessica questions him. Steve walks back over to the spot where he was sitting previously and picks up his lighter. He turns to the siblings. "Just get ready." He tosses the lighter over to Dustin who catches it. He then takes out the bats from the backpack and hands one over to Jessica.

"You stay here and protect the kids."

Jessica nods.

Steve takes a step toward the door when Jessica stops him by grabbing his arm. "You better come back to me in one piece, Steve Harrington." "I will, Jess. Just stay here." Jessica gives Steve's arm a light squeeze before letting go. Steve opens the doors and steps out of the bus. Jessica closes the door behind him.

Steve takes slow steps toward the middle of the junkyard. He twirls the nail bat around in his hand. Hearing a growling noise, Steve raises his bat up high. Up on top of the bus, Lucas and Max kept a close eye out for Dart. Lucas brings the binoculars up to his eyes as he scans the junkyard. Steve lets out a low whistle as he twirls the bat around again. "Come on, buddy." He continues to whistle, hoping to draw Dart out.

Jessica and Dustin both watch Steve from the windows. Max climbs down the ladders and joins the siblings. "What's he doing?" she questions them. "Expanding the menu," Dustin tells her.

Back outside, Steve creeps around the junkyard, still on high alert for Dart. "Come on, buddy. Come on, buddy. Come on. Dinner time. Human tastes better than cat, I promise."

From the bus, Max shakes her head as she keeps her eyes locked on Steve. "He's insane." "He's awesome," Dustin breathes out in amazement. "He's both of those things," Jessica tells them.

From a distance, Steve spots Dart. Steve steadies his footing and raises his bat up high, ready to strike when suddenly he hears Lucas' panicked voice from the bus. "Steve, watch out!" "A little busy here!" Steve calls back. "Three o'clock! Three o'clock!" Steve looks over his shoulder just to see another Demogorgon jump up onto an abandoned car. The Demogorgon lets out a screech at Steve.
