❝ perhaps one did not want to be loved so much as to be understood. ❞

JAMES POTTER had a special place in Evelyn Knightley's heart, upfront and center. She had been in love with the bespectacled boy from the moment they met, which was at the young age of three years old (don't ask her how she realized thisㅡlove is mysterious! and all that).
Their parents, the men of which were colleagues, were close friends; and really did Evelyn a favor by introducing them, a sentiment that was not shared by James.
Through the years, Evelyn had given him a series of events that left him traumatized. She'd once given him cupcakes (that were strangely bitter and tasted of garlic) and a gift box (which gave him a papercut, and was overflowing with pink glitter). She was clingy, always happy to be in his presence. She was always smiling at him, so bright and vibrant. His other playmates teased him endlessly for it.
To him, Evelyn was a menace.
When they had first arrived at Hogwarts (another embarrassing moment for James: when Evelyn discovered this and loudly expressed her joy in front of the whole school), things between them had been the same. James did his best to ignore her lovesick advances, while she continued such lovesick advances.
It wasn't even that over-the-top, in her opinion. Evelyn would catch herself staring at him in class sometimes (completely unintentional, she swore), she would always try to be his partner in some requirements (simply because she knew what a lovely team they would make), or even just the simple act of sitting beside him at breakfast.
The holidays, in which their families gathered, were different stories.
James, along with his three friendsㅡSirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrewㅡeventually claimed the title of the troublemakers at Hogwarts. They were a rambunctious bunch, always pranking students and staff; but not Evelyn.
Never Evelyn.
Their families were close, James reasoned, so pranking her would make way for a lengthy scolding from his parents. This, of course, made Evelyn swoon even if she didn't know the reason why she was safe from the Marauders' mischief. She found him and everything he did dreamy.
Until he unknowingly broke her heart.
At the beginning of their Third Year, Evelyn had completely ignored James Potter, which only made him wonder why. It wasn't long before he caught himself missing her. Slowly, he fell harder for the girl that no longer wanted anything to do with him.
