i walk down the halls of the mental hospital behind a nurse. i had just arrived minutes before in a car similar to a police car. the doors were locked and there was a wall between the front and backseats of the car. i had been searched and interrogated before a nice lady began to lead me through the hospital. she was a tall blonde with gentle features. she stopped briefly at the cafeteria. "breakfast is served at 8:00am, lunch at 12:00pm, and dinner at 6:00pm. after you are officially diagnosed by the hospital's psychologist tomorrow evening, you'll receive medicine at certain times." she nodded at me to ensure i understood and continued walking. she walked briskly through double doors and down a hallway. the walls were filled with drawings and stick figures. there were no doors, just empty doorways leading to rooms. after passing a couple, she stopped at a doorway to a small room with two identical beds. "Castiel, this is your bedroom, you'll share it with Jasper." i nodded at her and walked in. i sat on the bed that looked untouched and smiled awkwardly at her. "i'll leave you be, Castiel." she walked away.
you may or may not be thinking what i'm doing in a mental hospital. you may be wondering who i am. to answer those questions, i am cass lucas. im here because i've been seeing things, my aunt thinks im schizophrenic. "Mr. Jackson, don't worry she just sees things! there is not a 'demon' on your desk! nor will there ever will be! goodness, Castiel. what has gotten into you?" she said to my teacher and principal, in front of my classmates after i had screamed and ran to a corner in the classroom. later that day, she had called the local mental hospital and explained to them what happened. about an hour later they had sent two ladies to fetch me from my home. now im sitting in my new room, alone.
when i was little, moving into a new house was fun and exciting. exploring the new hiding places and the new town. picking out my room and arranging my toys and furniture in my own perfect ways. however, this wasn't that. this time, im forced to be in this lonely room with someone i don't know. surrounded by strangers. nurses checking up on me if i look too out of place. the feeling of realizing "holy shit, im not home" is one of the worst feelings. i don't like it here. i've only been here for not even a day and i hate it. everything is creepy and suspicious. i don't trust anything. i cant trust anything.
a couple of minutes pass by and im still sitting on my new bed, trying to be comfortable. i hear footsteps enter my room. i look up, there's a boy around my age across the room from me. he wore glasses that fell ever so slightly off his nose and a bright yellow baggy t-shirt that went down to his knees. he had baby blue grippy socks. he stood confidently and his hair was curly and in his face.
"hey, im jay jay," he stuck his hand out at me. i looked at his hand and then at him, he smiled goofy and moved his hair out of his eyes. i grabbed his hand and shook it cautiously. "woah! your hands are so soft! do you use lotion or something?" he exclaimed as he examined my hands. "uh, no i don't think so," i said quietly. he looked back up at me and laughed as he let go of my hand and put his behind his back. "sorry, man. got excited. what's your name, again?" he asked me nervously. "cass."
"do ya like your bed, cass?"
i nod.
"that's surprising, i hate mine."
i nod again.
"do you not talk much?"
i shrug. i do, indeed, talk much. just not that much to guys who caress my hands when they first meet me.
"got it." he smiles at me. the guy is weird, but his smile is cute.
all of a sudden there's a bell ringing from down the hallway. "that's the bell for dinner, wanna walk with me?"
i nod. "perfect!" he grabs my hand and drags me down to the cafeteria. "welcome, cass, to the cafeteria! the place with shitty food and even shittier people! enjoy," he leads me to the lunch line. as we get to the trays, he hands me one and explains the lunch lady's personalities to me.
"there are three lunch ladies here. theres sue, she's been here the longest. she's the closest to most of the patients, so she'll give you more food the closer you are to her. then there's alison, she's the meanest one of the three. she doesn't do favorites, and if you say thank you she grunts at you; however, if you don't say anything she'll grab your tray away and won't give it back until you say thank you. finally, there's teresa. shes quiet, and new. seems nice. that's about it." after that whole monologue about the lunch ladies, i reply with an "oh okay, cool," and grab my utensils.
i made sure to say thank you to them all and smile. after we're done getting our food, jay jay leads me to a small table. there was a girl sitting there, picking at her food. "rose! helloooo there, this is my new roommate, cass," he introduces us as he sits down next to her. i stand there and smile at her. "sit! don't be shy," he suggests. i sit across the table from them and look at the two. "hi, cass. im rosemary," she says confidently.
she had a scar on her lip and wore a striped long sleeved shirt. she had pretty eyes. that's the first thing i noticed about her. her dark brown eyes. her hair was long and super curly. like, 4c kinda hair.
"rosemary?" i say, she nods.
"isn't rosemary a spice?" she looked at me, seemingly annoyed. "this is why you should just say rose, rose," jay jay suggested.
"whatever, yes it's a spice. just call me rose." i look down. i feel bad, but i don't say anything.
i'm not sure if i want to be friends with these guys or if i should keep distance.
