"You want me... to have lunch with you?"

You couldn't help the absolute surprise that filled your tone. You were a nobody, but right there in front of you stood Choi Yeonjun, who previously had no interest in you, asking you to have lunch with him. Not only were you surprised, but you were confused. What had you done to catch his attention? Surely nothing you had thought, but it turns out, you had done something. You just didn't know what.

"Yes. That's what I said," he replied sassily. He had an attitude, that's for sure.

"Sorry, but I'm not hungry," you replied, gathering your things and trying to leave. He stopped you before you could walk away.

"You're never in the cafeteria. Don't think I haven't noticed," he said, stopping you dead in your tracks.

"And what about it?" You asked, turning your head slightly so you could see him in your peripheral.

"I wanna know why," he almost demanded, like he was entitled to know this about you.

"Well, I'm very sorry but that's none of your business. Please just continue to ignore my existence like you did in the past," you spoke, a definite bite to your words, before you left, heading for the place you usually sat during lunch. This time, you were more aware of your surroundings. You would glance over your shoulder often, though you felt you did that often enough at home.

Yeonjun was confused, even a little angry. He was intrigued the previous day. He felt like he had never seen you at the school before, which was odd because Yeonjun made a point to know every person at the school. His father told him that if he wanted to be a good businessman, he would have to remember faces and names. Yeonjun had been in this school for almost 4 years and he hadn't seen you until that day. He always paid close attention to everyone. He could name every student in the cafeteria and name their parents and the company their parents work for in the blink of an eye, but he couldn't name you. That's why he was so intrigued. How could he have not noticed you at all? You've been in the same school with him as long as Soobin had, and that's a long time. He just couldn't understand how he didn't notice you.

You, on the other hand, were cursing yourself for being noticed. You had to find some way to get rid of his attention. In middle school, all the kids were ruthless. They found out how poor you were and immediately started teasing you.

"It's lunch time," they would say, knowing that you didn't have a lunch. They would dangle food in your face only to eat it a few seconds after. That was the hardest thing to endure.

They also picked on your clothes. They even accused you of not washing your clothes. You wore pretty much the same thing everyday, so the students in your old middle school would pick on you for that. They weren't even nice clothes either.

You never could've imagined the shock on their face when your teacher questioned you about attending the most expensive private school in the city. Your mother really went all out for you. You had told her about the bullying and teasing and for that, and a few other reasons, she got more jobs to send you to the private school. She was a diamond in a pile of coal and she didn't deserve anything that happened to her.

Your mother was an angel. She had been hurt so many times. Too many times. She'd worked herself to the bone for you. A while back, right before the big incident, your mother had worked hard to buy you a necklace. It was simple but fancy. It was the one thing you would never give away, never lose. She had worked so hard to get it for you. You never wanted to lose it.

Yes, your mother was indeed a pure soul who would do anything for you. She was all you had. It would crush you to lose your mother.

When school ended, you were sure to rush home, making sure there was no sight of Yeonjun. When you made it home, your mother was already gone. You checked the fridge and saw your normal dinner. Some old leftover fast food from her work. You were starting to get sick of it, but you ate it anyway, knowing you didn't have a choice.
