Ch. 2 We wanted to welcome you to the neighborhood

" Shit!" Benny cursed. He immediately closed the curtains and stepped back.

" ¡Benny! ¡Querido! ¿Puedes venir a la cocina?" Benny hears his mother speak. [Translation: Benny! Dear! Can you come to the kitchen?]

" Coming!" Benny shouts in response. He turns around, opens the door, and walks out of his bedroom.

Benny arrives at the kitchen and steps inside. His chocolate brown eyes blinked when he saw his mother holding a container with his favorite pastry, caramel flan, inside.

" What's the occasion? It's not my birthday yet," Benny asked, looking and feeling stunned.

" It's for the neighbors," Miriam responded with an accent. " And you are coming with your father and me to meet them," She warmly smiled.

" Do I um have to?" Benny asked, looking and feeling awkward.

" Yes. And besides, Emily said that the neighbors have two children close to your age. You can befriend them and take them to meet your other friends. I want them to feel comfortable since I know moving to a new place can make a child uncomfortable," Miriam looks at her son.

" Okay," Benny nods his head in response.

" Jose! Get your butt off of the TV. We will meet our new neighbors," Miriam shouts at her husband.

Jose didn't want his wife to get angry at him, so he obeyed. He turns off the TV, stands up, and stretches.

" Oooo! Flan," Jose stared at the dish with hungry eyes. He was about to take the container, but his wife slapped his hand.

" Not for you," Miriam scolds her husband.

Jose adorably pouts.

Benny fondly stared at his parents. Even though his father is the man of the house, his mother is the one that sets the rules and controls everything.

" Alright. Let's get going," Miriam walks towards the door.

Jose walked past his wife and opened the door for her.

Miriam stepped out of the house with her husband and son following behind her. She warmly smiled when she saw her new neighbors carrying boxes and entering the house.

" Hello!" Miriam calls out.

Lillian stops walking and turns around, seeing a couple and their son walking across the street and towards her new home.

" Hello," Lillian greets the family.

" We are the Rodriguez, and we live across the street from you. My name is Miriam, and this is my husband, Jose, and our son, Benny," Miriam introduced her family to Lillian.

Bill steps out of the house and sees the Rodriguez family. Katherine and Scotty stood behind him and stared at the family with a curious gaze.

" And we are the Smalls. My name is Lillian. Behind me is my husband, Bill, and our children, Katherine and Scotty," Lillian introduced her family to the Rodriguez family.

Bill turns his head back and sees his children standing behind him.

" Kids. Introduce yourself to our neighbors," Bill stepped behind his children to let them introduce themselves.

Katherine and Scotty looked at each other and then stared at the Rodriguez family.

" Hello. My name is Katherine Smalls. You can call me Kat," Katherine kindly introduced herself.

" Aw! You have such a beautiful name. Can I call you Kitty?" Miriam gushes.

Katherine blushes, looking and feeling embarrassed, but she formally nods her head.

Benny's chocolate brown eyes widened when he realized that the pretty kid wasn't a boy but a girl.

" Greetings! My name is Scotty Smalls," Scotty formally introduced himself.

" You're a girl!" Benny exclaimed, causing everyone to stare at him.

Katherine's bright blue eyes intently stared at Benny's chocolate brown eyes.

" I told you that your clothes would someday mistake you as a boy," Scotty whispers to his older stepsister.

Katherine playfully rolled her bright blue eyes at her younger stepbrother. She raised an eyebrow when she saw Benny stare at her in disbelief.

" Be nice, Benny," Miriam firmly speaks.

" Sorry," Benny blushes, looking and feeling embarrassed when he sees his mother give him a stern stare.

" This pastry is for you and your family. It's a Caramel Flan," Miriam held the container to Lillian.

" Aww! How thoughtful. You didn't have to," Lillian accepts the container.

" We wanted to welcome you to the neighborhood," Miriam warmly smiled.

" Thank you," Lillian kindly smiled.

Bill and Jose looked at each other, and they nodded their heads in response.

" Benny! Why don't you take the kids to meet your friends," Miriam turns her gaze to her son.

Benny bashfully stared at his mother and the two children.

" Yes! Go with him and meet the other children. Just be careful and keep an eye out for each other," Lillian turns her gaze to her children.

" Okay. Come on, Scotty," Katherine wraps an arm around her younger stepbrother and pulls him close.

" Be home before ten," Bill speaks.

" Okay!" Katherine and Scotty waved goodbye as they walked up to Benny.

" I um," Benny nervously speaks while looking at Katherine. " I usually meet up with my boys at the town's market," He explains. " Follow me," He turns around and begins to walk.
