Ch. 1 The Preface

" It's me, Lillian," Lillian calls out.

Footsteps walking towards the door grabbed Lillian's attention. Her blue eyes blink when she sees the door open, and her stepdaughter is looking at her.

Lillian still remembered the day she met her stepdaughter for the first time. Katherine was five, while her son was three, about to be four in 1955. The young female lost her mother in a horrific accident on the 4th of July. Meanwhile, her son lost his father in duty as a Marine.

Lillian met her future husband, Bill, from a mutual, and the two got along well when they learned that the other was a widow/er and had children close in age.

" I know you are upset. But, I cannot let you sleep on an empty stomach," Lillian softly speaks while pointing at the untouched food.

Katherine opened her mouth to say something, but her stomach cut her off by growling.

" Traitor!" Katherine hissed.

Lillian amusingly giggled, causing Katherine to blush and look embarrassed.

" You can come into my room," Katherine mumbled. She opens the door and lets her stepmother into her bedroom.

Lillian stepped inside the bedroom and placed the food on the desk. She looked at her surroundings and noticed that her stepdaughter is fond of baseball, like her husband. She even sees posters of famous baseball players from different baseball teams throughout the states.

Katherine walks toward her desk and sits down. She grabs her fork and begins to eat her dinner.

" You know your father wants what is best for our family," Lillian speaks.

Katherine eats, listening to her stepmother speak.

" Your father is aware of how much Long Beach means to you since it is also the town where your mother got buried," Lillian turns to stare at her stepdaughter.

Katherine sadly stared at her dinner while eating.

" He only agreed to take this job because he knows that your mother would have wanted him to follow his dream and be successful to help support his family," Lillian walks up to her stepdaughter.

Katherine stops eating and turns to stare at her stepmother.

" Knowing Mama, she would have also wanted me to be there for Papa and not let him be alone during tough times," Katherine grabbed her stepmother's hand and lightly grasped it. " I'm sorry for ruining dinner," She apologized.

" I'm not mad. It's understandable for you to feel this way," Lillian fondly stares at her stepdaughter.

" I'm going to apologize to Papa," Katherine lets go of her stepmother's hand, grabs her dinner, and walks out of her bedroom.

Bill was eating dinner alone in the dining room since his stepson finished eating and went to his bedroom to play some video games.

" Papa," Katherine enters the dining room, causing her father to stare at her.

" Katherine," Bill whispered. Looking at his daughter, he couldn't help but see his deceased wife in her. The two females share their fire-red hair and temper, but her blue eyes were his.

Katherine walks toward the dining table and sits down across from her father.

Bill's blue eyes intently stared at his daughter's blue eyes.

" I'm sorry for making a big ordeal," Katherine apologized. " I felt so bad since I did promise my best friends I would be with them for our 7th-grade year," She explained. " And also, since this town is where Mama got buried," She whispered.

Bill's gaze softened.

" I know. It took me weeks to decide if I should accept this job or not since this town is where Mama got buried too. But, she would have also wanted us to move on and make new memories," Bill speaks.

Katherine nods her head in response.

" And besides, we are not leaving California. We will be living in the San Fernando Valley, specifically in a town called Burbank. " Bill looks at his daughter. " Which is like an hour and a half drive from Long Beach," He softly smiles.

Katherine looked at her father with a hopeful gaze.

" So, if you want your best friends to hang out at our new place, they are more than welcome to with their parent's permission, of course," Bill speaks.

Katherine's blue eyes sparkled. She stands up, runs around the dining table, and hugs her father tightly.

" Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Eeee! I will let my best friends know what is happening," Katherine kissed her father's cheek. " Love you, Papa!" She runs to her bedroom, leaving behind a half-eaten dinner.

Bill's gaze softened, warmly smiling, watching his daughter leave the dining room.

Lillian enters the dining room, and the couple stares at each other adoringly.

" This is our new home," Her father's voice brought Katherine to reality.

Katherine opens the passenger door and looks at her surroundings.

" Oh, Honey. This home is beautiful," Lillian speaks while getting out of the car.

Scotty gets out of the car and looks at his surroundings. He blinks when he sees a boy close to his age look at him and his family. However, the boy closed the curtains immediately when he got caught staring.
