The second defense a group of of humans and demons fighting for the good of humanity, killing demons and if needed to other humans. All of the main pillars hade no clue about this other unit of incredibly strong slayers that protects them from death. The second defense knows that the pillars are to be protected from death even if it means death for them. The second defense group is bigger then the hashira. The second defense has 26 people all of them raised together in isolation. All of them were taken in after they either became a demon or became an orphan. The demons took care of the human children in till they became older. The demons came to the second defense estate first, then the humans did. All of the demons don't need human flesh to survive, just a little bit of blood in which the humans provide. The demons consider the humans there children, and love them as such. Every 10 years 5 baby's come to the estate, and everyone takes care of them from the meanest to the nicest. But they all have one think in common they can't remember there past.
