"I don't know guys..." I whispered, resting my elbow on the countertop as I looked at the faces of my friends. Only friends, that is. Alexa Cooper and Olivia Thompson, two girls I couldn't live without. They had arrived within five minutes of my asking, even if it was seven in the morning. I was tired of sitting alone in this dingy old house.
"It's not that bad, Becca honestly, just stay here! It's not like that 'wolf' is gonna turn into a man and walk into your house! This isn't twilight." Lexi said, stroking Nani with a small grin and a giggle. She emphasized the word wolf strongly. I knew she thought the whole "Wolves in West Virginia" story in the paper was just some hoax.
Liv laughed at this, "She would like to think so...all she does is read those weird vampire and werewolf romances." She took a chug of the coffee she gripped tightly in her hand.
I stared at the shadows that danced along the wooden floor as the morning sun rose and fixed the blanket that was draped over my shoulders, "I just don't want anything bad to happen..." They knew about my dreams, and knew exactly why I was so scared.
I've always had a fear of wolves. A frightful run-in changed my mind at a young age. Their eyes alone sent cold chills down my arms. Their teeth a nightmare in its own. Imagining the things they could do with those scared me to no end.
Yet, the myths that follow these creatures pleased me more then the beast itself. The magnificent thought of a human turning into an animal had never left my interest.
"Well....You have us!" Lexi stood from her seat on the barstool and strutted to the refrigerator.
"Yeah I know...but what I don't know is how you cannot weigh four hundred pounds!" Olivia laughed as Alexia rolled her eyes and yanked open the silver door.
"Well...you could always get a security system..you know..like the houses on the hill have?" Liv suggested and took her turn stroking Nani.
I rolled my eyes again, "Just because your boyfriends have them doesn't mean everyone else can.." I hissed, dreading the day those boys entered our lives. Liam and Niall were genial, yes, but gruesome at the same time. Bullies rather.
Niall and Liam arrived here from England along with another friend of theirs in the second grade. Their fathers all worked together in a highly ranked company that decided to broaden its horizons by moving to The states. So, they shipped off their three best workers to manage the business. Unfortunately, they had to settle in West Virginia and take over the town and my friends. They moved into the richer part of town, the HillSide Homes, and have yet to leave.
Lexi turned around, carrot in hand, waving it vigorously in my face, "Hey...Niall's a sweetheart..unlike that one boy.." She stuttered and returned to her seat.
I furrowed my eyebrows, "What boy?" I pushed off the counter, joining them at the kitchen island.
Liv looked at Lexi, who only smiled while gnawing on her carrot, "Idiot..." She murmured.
Olivia returned her gaze to me, lips twisted into a frown, "Harry Styles...The boy who lived at the top of the hill...his father was in charge of everything? His mother was absolutely gorgeous? Wore her hair in curls everyday and had about a million velvet gowns? Harry...Jesus they were the richest family to live in Preston Becca!" She exclaimed, obviously surprised that I didn't remember any specific boy from my past.
She swatted away Nani, who had rubbed her tail under Olivia's chin, and continued, "His father had salt and pepper hair, was rather short...very smart and funny...he came to 'Bring Your Parent to School Day' in like...fifth grade."
"And how am I supposed to remember this. I'm a freshman in college and you expect me to remember something so simple!" I could feel myself begin to get frustrated. I couldn't even remember how we got on this topic.
"For God's sake Rebecca, he's the one who went utterly insane and tried to kill that man after his parents died in a car accident!" Lexi snapped angrily, her hand smacking down on the table. She always had a temper and hated when people acted stupid, something that I wasn't doing at the moment. Well...not on purpose.
I was taken aback by her snap, but quietly thought on it. And sure enough, the memories of the small boy with the generous green eyes slowly flooded my mind. His laughter and smile something no one could possibly forget, but some how I did. I remembered his small singing voice that I heard everyday at one in the afternoon, being I stood next to him in chorus up until freshman year. That was the year everything went bad.
After his parents were killed by a drunken driver, I remember the news report that came on three days that followed. The female newscaster appeared while my family was enjoying our nightly program. She was frantic when she reported that a young boy by the name of Harry Styles had snuck into the hospital by claiming he was visiting his father who was hurt in a the accident a few days back. He walked into the patients room and cut off his air supply, the only thing that had been keeping him alive. He was later taken into the State's custody, where they then put him in a correction facility. The man's supply was fixed, and he survived.
"I remember now." I whispered through my blanket, running my hands along the smooth island top.
Olivia ran her hand through my hair, playing with the waves of chocolate that were choked up in a hair tie, "Let's change the topic to something a little less grim.." She suggested and let her hand fall to my shoulder.
I looked up at the two through my eyelashes, silently envious of their beauty. Alexa's eyes, not some simple brown but an intense livid. Olivia's hair caressed her admirable face with gentle waves of gold. I had always loved these features and had always wanted them for my own, "Alright.."
"We should go see that new movie." Lexi said taking another item from my refrigerator.
Olivia's forehead creased when she looked at Lex, "And which would that be? A new movie comes out every weekend Stupid...be specific." She hissed, folding her arms on the marble.
"The zombie one...Warm Bodies or something like that." She said with trouble, her mouth full of food.
"Sounds good...but you're paying for my groceries next week.." I grinned, the wolf situation still burning in the back of my mind. Then came the Harry situation. He was taken in five years ago for attempted murder. This past February was the anniversary. I remembered the frantic reporter saying they could only keep him for five years, then he would be let go. Which meant that the boy with the clover eyes was out of his cage.
I could feel myself wanting to see him, but I knew it was wrong. Very wrong.
