(Prologue)
"Mom! Dad! I'm leaving!" I scream from the porch of our house in Malibu, California. I grab my car keys and head to school. Last day of school for me as a senior! This fall I'll be moving back to London to go to college. Back to London, you ask. When I was around 15, my mom found a job here, so we had to move. I have picked up on the American accent, though. I pull into the school parking lot and get out.
"KENNEDY!" I hear my name being shouted out from across the parking lot. I whip around seeing my best friend, Eryn, running towards me like there's a stampede behind her. She squeals and jumps up and down, making her dyed red, curly hair bounce.
"YOU WON?" I screech with glee. She had entered a contest for winning a flat in London, hoping we could share. I honestly hoped she did. I didn't know if I was ready to live by myself.
"YES! YES I DID!" She exclaims. We do a little happy dance, gaining a few looks from people. I hear the three minute warning bell and dart inside, stopping by my ocean blue locker to grab my books for first period. The last bell rings as I walk into the classroom. I take my usual seat next to Jack, the school's biggest player.
"Hey babe." He winks. I laugh at his attempt and roll my eyes.
"Hello, Jack." I reply smoothly, staring forward at Mr. Dawson, the history teacher. He starts handing out finals.
"You may begin."
---------------------------------------------
"That took just about forever!" Eryn exclaims during lunch.
"I know. Ugh, I can't stop thinking about London." I tell her, sliding my "food" around with my fork.
"Me neither. Do you think we'll see One Direction?" She asks giddily, her face lighting up like a seven year-old's on Christmas.
"Oh my God! I hope so!" I exclaim honestly. I am a huge fan, if you're wondering. At home you can barely see my walls, as they're covered in posters. My dad hates them, so I don't talk about them as much as I'd like to.
"Hello, ladies." Our goofy friend, Chris waltzes up to our table.
"Chris!" We exclaim at the same time.
"JINX!" Eryn shouts. I start pouting and look at Chris with puppy dog eyes. It's his weakness.
"Christopher Lee Jennings, if you say her name I will scratch your motorcycle." Eryn looks at him with a death glare. I shoot her one of my own. I quickly text him, telling him to think of something.
"Sorry, Kennedy," Eryn glares at him again.
"It was only once! You have to say Kennedy three times!" He says. I perk up and hold up two fingers.
"KENNEDY MILLER, PLEASE COME TO THE OFFICE, KENNEDY MILLER." The intercom booms.
"That's three!" I scream at Eryn. She laughs.
"Someone got in trouble." Chris coos evilly.
"Oh shut up. It's probably about something other than me being in trouble." I tell him, getting up to throw my tray away.
"KENNEDY MILLER. PLEASE COME TO THE OFFICE IMMEDIATELY." It booms again.
"I'll be right back." I tell them. I walk to the office. I walk up to the secretary, Miss Walsh.
"Hey, Miss Walsh. How's your life been going?" I ask her. She grunts and glares at me. We don't exactly see eye -to-eye on most things. One time, I might've started a food fight and told Miss Walsh that there was a hair in my food, so I threw it. Then it "accidently" landed on Carly, the school slut, and she took it the wrong way. Don't ask me how I even got into college, because I don't even know the answer to that one.
"Mr. Martin would like to see you." She tells me.
Well this can't be good.
"Ah, Miss Miller, have a seat." He sighs.
"Is something wrong?" I ask him, frightened.
"Well, there's good news and bad news. Which would you like to hear first?"
"Uh, the good news." I say, slightly puzzeled.
"Well, you're now on full scholarship."
"Uh, what? I thought you could only get full scholarship if you had all A's for all throughout highschool, or your parents were divorced or," I gulp, "dead."
"I'm sorry, Miss Miller. They had a car accident. Unfortunately, they didn't make it."
I stand up abruptly, pushing my chair across the room.
"Is this some kind of sick joke? Am I being punked? Are you sure that they aren't just visiting pegasi? What if they were turned into Ligers. They can't be dead!" I ramble, beginning to cry. Soon, I begin tugging my hair.
"Miss Miller, please calm down." Mr. Martin finally squeaks out.
"MY PARENTS JUST DIED AND YOU EXPECT ME TO CALM THE FUCK DOWN?" I scream at him. And with that, my world went black.
