Chapter 1

Sophia's P.O.V

1:50AM. I impatiently sat up, and stared out into the darkness of my room. Why couldn’t I sleep? Four days now, my mind was denying me any form of sleep. I would just lie in my sea of thoughts, frowning as time dragged along…Thinking. And thinking. Or maybe not even thinking, just listening and waiting. What I was waiting for, I had no idea. For some strange reason, things felt incredibly different tonight. Maybe it was the way the refined moon shone delicately across the whole neighbourhood, urging me to reach out and enclose its beauty into me. I pulled open the window with great force that even I didn’t realise I had. Its illuminated rays ignited peace and serenity throughout me as a gentle atmosphere was created. I perched onto the window sill, dangerous? I know. Recently, a rare adrenalin would run through me, a sensation to do something so daring and intimidating. Then, I would switch back to my sane side and realise how dangerous the matter could be. Tonight, I didn’t care. I was in the mood for something blood rising. Analysing that thought, I came to a conclusion. I, Sophia Mendez was addicted to the sense of fear. That thought itched in the back of my mind, what kind of a girl enjoyed fear? I curled up into what I felt was a secure position like a venomous snake, despite being ever so deadly, had its exceptions in being afraid. I turned to focus on the outside surrounding and just as I was realising how beautiful the night was, a strong forceful almost deliberate gust of wind shot into my face, throwing me off the window sill. Out of the corner of my eyes, I caught a glimpse of movement. No ordinary movement, lightening speed movement. Like nothing had ever been there, but trust me, something was there. I felt it. I could feel the pounding of my heart, reaching a new level of volume, burning and what felt like ripping out of my chest. Something or someone was watching me. A sudden urge of sickness swept through me. What the hell was going on? Which is exactly what I was saying when I saw those enticing, deep, mysterious blue eyes. I found myself looking straight through them, so cold and frightful but so yet intruding. I felt myself breathing out loud, I couldn’t stop myself, I wanted to jump out of the window right there, somehow knowing that I would be safe even if I did. People aren’t scared of the dark, they’re scared of what’s lurking in the dark. But if you don’t find out what’s in the dark, how will you carry on living your life? Darkness is all around, its up to you if you want to find the light. In this case, there was something there, luring me into its trap. It was hypnotising, whatever it was. It was a drug to me, and I wanted more of it. We continued to long into each other eyes, my heart was beating so loud that it felt like an internal scream scavenging my insides. I almost didn’t hear the hurry of footsteps bounding on the stairs behind the door- mom. I tore my eyes away from the scene, to face my mom. She burst into my room, her vivid, scarlet- coloured hair blowing back, her brown eyes flamed a desire of anguish, like all she wanted to do was break down and cry. She darted across the room towards me, and held me in a tight embrace with her petite figure against mine and her fragile arms wrapped around me. I turned a sharp glance to the unknown someone or something outside, it was gone. Within those few seconds, it had gone. I don’t know why but I felt my heart drop. Without me knowing it was there, wanting me, I felt alone. The stinging pain in my throat, that I only knew too well, appeared and my eyes filled with tears. She pulled back, her hands still clinging onto my shoulders.
