This is the moment I've been waiting for my entire life
There are only two guesses between me and victory (plus bragging rights for the next week).
I settle for the safe option and ask an easy question; hoping luck will be on my side.
"Okay." I look at my options splayed in front of me. "Can you swim?" My eyes drift back up to James who is putting a little too much thought into the question. He bites his lower lip, unaware of the dent that has formed from the countless times he has done this before.
After what feels like a lifetime, he answers with a questionable, "No?"
Is it so hard to know if an animal can swim? All you have to do is throw it in a random body of water and see if it drowns.
"Alright, are you a type of pet?" he asks.
"Yes, I am," I confirm suspiciously. I swear he has x-ray vision and can see what cards I have left. He is way too good at this game. Actually, make that any kind of board or card game. There is a reason why he isn't invited to family game night anymore.
"It's down to the final 3 animals," his attempt at a serious announcer voice makes me laugh, "A cat, rabbit or naked mole rat." He squints his eyes tightly as he stares me down, "What are your thoughts on me acquiring a naked mole rat as a companion?"
Blinking a couple of times, I try to work out if he is joking or not.
There have been many instances in the past where I made the mistake of thinking he was kidding around when in actual fact he was being completely and utterly serious. It is how I ended up with a Shetland pony eating my 10th birthday cake (people shouldn't just leave their ponies lying around) and how I got tricked into skydiving.
"Well, I can tell you one thing. It definitely won't be turning you into a chick magnet anytime soon. But I can guarantee I'll be calling you Ron Stoppable."
James gives me a questioning look.
It all comes down to the final decision. What will he do?
Will he choose correctly and do his usual victory dance which pretty much looks like one of them car sale tube man?
Or will he take pity on me for losing seven times in a row and let me have this one victory?
He slams his hands on the table so hard that I may have peed my pants a little.
"IT COULD NEVER BE THE RABBIT," he shouts, "BECAUSE I NEVER GET THE RABBIT, DO I COREY?"
I can't help but let out an exhausted groan "Not this again." So he has picked the wild card move instead: Random outburst about something that happened 13 years ago.
"I will never let you forget that fateful day when you-"
"For the last time, I didn't lose it!" I cry. How many times will I have to put up with this? I get a reminder at least once a month.
He places a finger on my lips, "Let me tell the story. It was a cold and rainy day, and the water was cascading-"
"It was summer and it hadn't rained in five months. We were in a devastating drought. There was a fire ban and water restrictions."

Humor"You know what I love about having a best friend?" I divert my eyes from the book to James who is staring back at me with a smile "What?" I answer what I hope is a rhetorical question. "I know that if I ever get in trouble you'll be right by my side...
