Latte Cookie rose out of her bed slowly. She glanced at her calendar: Dec. 25th greeted her. She ran out of bed in her Christmas pajamas to find Almond Cookie sitting on his favorite side of the couch; that man was picky. "GOODMORNINGGOODMORNINGGOODMORMING!!!! It's Christmas, Almond!!!!" exclaimed Latte with a huge grin on her face. That got a chuckle out of the older dude.
"Heh, someone's excited for today." Almond grunted as he got up. He was usually just a grumpy old dude, but today, he couldn't bare to be so grumpy on Latte's favorite holiday. "I did invite someone, they shoul-" Just then, there was a knock at the door. "I'll get it." He opened the door, and Walnut Cookie ran to hug Almond tightly. "Hello, sweetie, how are you?" He asked. "I'm doing good, Papa! I'm being just like you, a detective!" She exclaimed. He led her over to the couch where Latte stood. "I couldn't forget about her, you know?" He whispered.
Latte smiled at the sight of her stepdaughter. "Hi Walnut!! Oooomerrychristmasmerrychristmasmerrychristmas!!!" said Latte in a jumble of words, embracing Walnut Cookie tightly. "First one to find the pickle ornament gets to open their presents first!" Latte hung back, because she knew where the ornament was. She watch Walnut and Almond exchange mischievous looks as they raced each other. It tugged at her heart to see Almond so happy. 𝙃𝙖𝙥𝙥𝙮. And her beautiful young stepdaughter spending time with her father. Christmas was a time for getting together and just having fun, and seeing the two do that together made Latte feel warm and fuzzy. "Found it!!" celebrated Walnut. "Lucky you!! Pick out a present!" Latte smiled sweetly to Walnut.
Almond brought Walnut a gift with her name. "Oh, it's from you, Papa! I'm excited!" She opened the gift quickly and looked inside. It was a pair of toy handcuffs. "Wow, Papa! You arrest bad cookies? I bet it's scary, but not to you! You're the bravest cookie I know!" Almond smiled gingerly and poked Walnut's cheek. "No..I think you're braver." Walnut looked offended. "Aaah, no!! I will arrest you if you say IM braver!!" Almond did a surprised look. "Oh my my, okay, i guess I'm braver. That's quite the threat." He chuckled and headed for another present.
"Those look pretty fancy, Walnut!" Latte's stepdaughter giggled as she pointed to a present. She whispered something to Almond before realizing she may have said it a little loud. She was a kid; could you blame her? It was Christmas morning, and the girl was excited. Latte wondered what Walnut had said to Almond—lucky for Walnut, she didn't happen to hear.
Almond gestured as to tell Walnut to hand Latte her gift. "Here's your present, Mom! I-I mean Miss Latte!"
Almond looked at Walnut with surprise.
"Aw, thank you, honey! Let's see.. To Latte, from Walnut!" She read the messy words carefully, then shook the box like a little kid. A partially hurt smile spread on her face like butter on a hot pancake. Would she ever be "Mom"? Latte considered Walnut her own daughter, in honor of Almond's late wife. Latte felt it was only right to do everything she would have with Walnut.
The satisfying sound of ripping wrapping paper spread through the room. When Latte opened the small box, she was greeted by a gorgeous ombre-y Latte Glyph. "Did you do this, sweetheart?" Latte was grinning ear-to-ear now.
Walnut tried to forget about the name mistake. "Yup, sure did! And I definitely totally did not need help from anyone!" said Walnut, glancing at Almond in a way she thought was sneaky. "Do you like it?"
"I love it, cakeroll. Thank you!" said Latte sweetly. She discreetly shot a knowing wink to Almond, whom proceeded to contemplate life. "Papa's turn!" grinned Walnut. She passed Almond a red-and-black plaid wrapped present with a small white bow on top.
Almond took the present, curious on what it would be. He shook it gently to his ear, and then took the bow off. He tore off the paper carefully, and opened the box. It was a nice magnifying glass with a ribbon tied onto it. > Ah, what else from my detective daughter, hm? < He thought. He picked it up and looked at Walnut. "Thank you! I needed a new one." He smiled at her. Then, he put the magnifying glass over his eye. "I spy a wonderful little girl who gets VERY thoughtful gifts," Almond said.
"My turn! Hehe!" Walnut giggled. Latte pointed to one with 'Walnut' written in swirly red. "That's a big present!!"
Latte giggled right along with her, watching the grin on Walnut's face get bigger every time a piece of wrapping paper was torn off. She truly loved her stepdaughter as Almond's late wife did. She felt it was only necessary, and she really felt Walnut was like a daughter. Watching her, happy, formed peace in Latte's Soul Jam as Walnut's jaw dropped at the large present in front of her.
"WOW!! YOU..YOU GOT ME THESE?!" Walnut held up the box of marble tracks and held it up high. "THANK YOU MOM!" Walnut ran up to hug Latte, ignoring the fact she called her mom instead of "Miss Latte" like she usually did. She figured Latte wouldn't mind, since they were getting closer every day they spoken together. "THANK YOUUUUU!" Walnut, as hyper as ever, then dashed to Almond. "PAPA, LOOK WHAT I GOT! NOW IM A REEAAAAL DETECTIVE!!! SUPER DUPER REAL!!" Almond winked at Latte, then looked down at his daughter. "Are we gonna be detectives together?" He asked her. "Even when we're apart?" Walnut went up to hug Almond. "Of course, Papa! I always think about the hard detective work you're doing while i'm doing mine!" He grinned the biggest he'd ever grinned. "That's the best thing i've heard all day. The second best was everything else you said." Almond kissed Walnut on the cheek, letting out another 'I love you.'
Latte ran up to the two, catching each by surprise. "Group hug!!" exclaimed Latte. She buried her head in the big pile of hug before whispering to Almond and Walnut: "Merry Christmas, you dorks." Latte smiled, followed by Walnut, and even Almond gave a full smile. Latte pecked Almond on the cheek, nestling her head on his shoulder. Walnut flopped over onto Latte's lap, so she could say directly to her "Thank you, Mama!" Latte rubbed her thumb on Walnut's hairline gently. "You're so very welcome."
