[CONNER]

Conner stood in front of his new school: Orange Highschool. It has been a year since the students have had school in person. He was entering as a freshman.

Conner could still remember the excitement he felt when the school district announced that they had an extended break in 7th grade. Now he's a freshman in high school. Time really flies.

One of his goals for this year was to get a girlfriend, like any other guy, of course. At least... for real guys like him. Conner has heard from his older friends that high school has way more... Gay people... than middle school.

It wasn't like he hated them or anything- or, perhaps he did. He just didn't understand their way of life. Like... He could never imagine himself being romantically and sexually attracted to the same gender. Never. What was there in guys that are better than girls, anyway?

Well, whatever. Today is the first day of high school. And it was gonna be a good day. There isn't gonna be any homework since the first few days of school is always the notorious "Syllabus Day". Then, after school, he will have basketball practice. All he needed to do today was relax, and check out girls. Conner walked through the gates of the school and headed towards the athletics building.

Speaking of basketball practice, most of his friends are going to be there since they're on the team. He can't wait to see his friends again.

Especially Karson.

Karson is his best friend and a fellow member on the basketball team. They had been best friends since 6th grade, and during quarantine, would play video games everyday with each other. Conner still remembered how short and skinny Karson was in middle school. But that was in 7th grade, and he's only seen Karson on Zoom calls ever since online school- their 8th grade year- started. He wondered if Carson had changed, appearance wise (he knew his personality didn't change one bit; he heard Karson's voice every night when they played video games during break).

It wasn't... Gay or anything to wonder how his best friend looked now, right? Conner himself had changed a lot. He grew a few inches and gained some muscle in his legs and torso. He didn't give "middle school boy" energy anymore. This is great, actually. He'd probably have a better chance of getting a girlfriend.

It was 7:50 AM when Conner dropped his bag for basketball off in the locker room. Even though school actually starts at 8:30, he decided to come almost an hour early so he could figure out where the fuck his classes were.

He didn't go to the freshman orientation or whatever that was, held 2 days ago. He thought it was embarrassing. It made him feel weak by following an upperclassman around touring the school. Karson didn't go either, so there was no point anyway.

Conner started searching for his first period class, geometry. He wasn't dumb- he knew how to count. It wouldn't take him that long to find a stupid class. Besides, half the school probably doesn't know where they're going either- it's been a year already since the last time they were in in-person school.

Conner walked out of the athletics building to the main building (wherever that was...) and was stopped by someone.

"Ayo, Conner! Long time no see." The guy called.

"It's Nolan!" Conner said as they clasped their hands into a handshake and tried to devour each other's hands, moaning. Nolan's hands found Conner's waist and they pulled away, laughing.

A few students who were also here early that walked by looked at them questionably. They don't know why. The kids in middle school never looked at him and his friends like that. It was completely normal for them. There's so many judgy people in high school.

What, they've never seen two friends greet each other? Conner thought.

"Conner, you've changed a lot!" Nolan started. "You actually look like you can get a girlfriend, now."

"Oh, come on. None of the girls from River were hot anyway." Conner said. It was true. All the girls from River Middle School were ugly. They'd better have had a glow up or something so they wouldn't embarrass themselves in highschool. Conner was just looking out for them.

"True. Anyways, what's your first period again?" Nolan asked. "I have geometry with Mr. Jorge."

"Me too! Let's go!" Conner said as the two boys did the same handshake a few moments ago.

"I have to go find Angelina first, then I'll see you in geometry." Nolan said as he turned around to leave.

"Ooohhh, who's Angelina?" I said, smirking.

"It's that girl I met during online school, okay? There's nothing going on between us." Nolan replied.

"Yet~"

"Dude, shut up! Anyways, I realized she's boring, so I'm gonna stop with her." Nolan said walking further away.

The two of them said their goodbyes and Conner walked further down the shaded pathway that led him to the science and main building (yes, he figured out there were signs with directions on them).

It was 7:55- still early. Conner made it into the main building. That's one step closer to finding his geometry class.

The bright orange and beige hallways were still empty. The walls and columns already have fliers and club posters up on them. None of them caught Conner's interest. He was fully committed to basketball and the upcoming 2 hours of practice after school is already gonna be enough for him. He had no time for whatever... Drama club, music collective (he didn't play an instrument), and the other clubs posted on the walls.

Conner was walking towards what he guessed was the library. Then, he heard a voice up ahead, behind one of the pillars in the foyer. A voice all too familiar.

It was Karson.
