"Whillow, I think that's too much." said Nila, poking my white hair all twirled up in a messy bun.

That comment only made me want to put even more sugar in the mixture.

"But Nila, there's never too much sugar!" I exclaimed.

"But if you put too much, my kitchen is gonna turn into a candy wonderland!" she told me.

"Good." I responded.

"No! Not good, it's 2 hours until my parents get back from the airport!" Nila lectured me. "Hey, hand me the corn syrup please." she requested. I gave Nila the corn syrup while giggling.

"What?" she asked, confused.

"It's just- why? Not that I'm complaining or anything, but this is probably the weirdest high school project I've ever done." I responded.

"Whillow, this is the only high school project we've ever done. The first one of the year."

"But still, wouldn't it be dangerous to have a whole class of kids make their own recipe for whatever? Mrs. Davis didn't even say what the recipe had to be for, just that we had to bring in what we had made. Of course, when I heard that, well, you, the super mind-reader Nila, already knew what was going on in my head."

"Duh" Nila laughed.

My parents died in a car accident when I was 9, so I always did everything with Nila. I slept in her tree house. Since it was built professionally, it had electricity, a heater for the chilly nights, and a study roof for the storms. She was practically my sister!

We stirred up the candy we made, boiled it, cooled it quickly. (I was impatient.)

It had hardened to look like a ripoff jawbreaker. When the time came to try it, Nila and I immediately spit it out. "Bleh, what did we forget?" I asked Nila.

"The honey! we should have put in honey." Nila snapped her fingers. "As if it needed even more sweetness." I heard her mutter under her breath.

I picked it up and threw it away, and we started to make another mixture. With honey this time. Adding in some sugar, I said, "Hey, let's take a break and go watch some TV, 'cause all this stirring is really hurting my arm."

"Okay, but we can't forget it! It's due tomorrow." Nila said, letting loose her caramel brown hair from her tight ponytail.

Author's Note:

As I said in my description, this story was originally going to be in my book Random One-Shots. It's just filled with a bunch of little min-stories good for a quick read, so please go and check that out. The first story is a side story I wrote featuring Whillow and Nila that takes place before this story. I will be uploading once or twice a week. Thank you for reading!
