Chapter 1

The moving

"Caesar! Where are you going?"

This dog. I just opened the door and he jumped out and started running. He can't wait to explore our new neighborhood. I ditch my car and start running to catch up with him. Oh no! He goes to the park.

"Caesar stop!"

Damn dog. He never listens.

I turn around the corner to enter the park and what I see leaves me speechless. Caesar, my glaring white pitbull sits calmly, and the icing on the cake? He's letting a stranger pet him. My world just turned over!

"How did you do that?" I'm asking the stranger.

"What do you mean?" He asks and then, he raises his head to look at me.

Wow! What a handsome stranger! Well done Caesar!

"Th- that he lets you petting him with such enthusiasm", I stammer. "He doesn't like anyone", I add explaining.

"What can I say? It seems he likes me." He comes closer to give Caesar's leash to me. "You are new here?" He asks.

"Well, I was just trying to unload my car in the new house but this monster over here took off as soon as I opened his door." He laughs.

"You are moving on your own?"

"No, with my mother who was supposed to be here to help me but she probably got caught up at work."

"Do you need help?"

"Sure, I could use some help."

"Lead the way", he says but he is already heading in the direction he saw me coming from. Caesar follows him a little too excited and as he does, he drags me behind him. The boy becomes quickly aware of my abusive dog.

"May I?" he says and he reaches his hand to take my monster's leash. Caesar doesn't seem to mind so I give him the leash, let him be dragged what do I care? I think and we all follow Caesar back to my car. We walk the remaining few feet to my car in silence.

The house my mother chose for us to live in, is a grey semi-detached building with a common entrance for the two houses, its doorway is flanked by two large bay windows. The door has a pointed lunette creating a gothic arch which is covered by a drip mold finished by label stops. Above the entrance is a stone balcony with a parapet. On either side are buttresses with finials on the top. Our house is the left one. The agent told us that a quiet family lives in the other one, but they are almost always out of town. The building looks old but well maintained. I like it!

When we get there, the boy who is clearly surprised, asks :

"You are going to live here?"

"I think so. I haven't been inside to see it yet but I believe it looks nice. If I have the right address. Why? It isn't good?"

"No, it is fine". "This is going to be interesting" he adds quieter.

I'm going to ask him why he thinks that but Caesar chooses this moment to growl really loud. I warn him to stop but as usual he never listens. Then, I can hear some seriously loud growlings and barkings from the direction of the park. Then the boy says:

"I'm sorry I have to go. I know I said I'll help you but I forgot something really important that I have to do". While he apologizes one more time to me, he ties Caesar's leash to the street lamp outside my house.

"Don't worry! I'll be fine. I think my mother is going to be here at any moment anyway" I tell him to make him stop apologizing about not helping me.

"Ok then I should go".

"Bye", I shout to him as he walks away. Instead of an answer he winks to me before his figure disappear around the corner.

I'm going to carry all these things on my own after all.. and these dogs are really loud. At least my Caesar is a quiet dog, when he really wants to be.

"Come on Caesar let's see our new house!"
