Day one COMPLETE! I'm so afraid that I'm just gonna crash and burn on day two lmfao. I'll do my best to do this once a day, but I'm apologizing in advance if I don't keep it up because I'm also SUPER busy at the moment. Anyways, here's number one. I hope you guys enjoy this :)
--Lysithea POV--
"Are you sure you don't need help??"
"I'm fine, Lysithea. I can manage, you know I can."
I sighed, stepping back as Y/N adjusted his cane, making sure it was enough to support his weight. No matter how bad it got, he remained his usual, frustratingly stubborn self, refusing all of my offers to make his life easier.
If it wasn't clear before, I cared for him. Dearly.
We had known each other for as long as I could remember- growing up I had spent a lot of my time hiding behind his back, as he always grinned and vowed to protect me from the ghosts I was so afraid of.
When we were both ten years old, he was diagnosed with the illness. The future source of all his problems and exasperations. But even at that young age he never let it faze him. He strived to improve his intellectual and magical abilities, resolving that since his ailment restricted him from physical combat, he'd focus on skills that didn't require that.
Where would I be without him? Seeing the sheer determination in his face, overcoming every obstacle that damned sickness threw at him... It amazed me. He single-handedly inspired me to work harder and harder, and somehow, despite all the time he spent studying, he was always able to make time for me. Slowly, my admiration for his drive turned into... something more.
We were both able to get into Garreg Mach Monastery, and the joy on his face when he received his acceptance letter would forever be imprinted in my mind. All of his hard work paying off.
Of course, in all those years, nothing had changed. He resented being a liability and useless, even when it came to ordinary everyday things like helping him down the stairs.
My eyes widened in fear as Y/N lapsed into a sudden coughing fit, losing his balance and teetering on the edge of the flight of stairs. With cat-like reflexes, I frantically reached out and pulled him back, allowing him to fall into my arms as our faces drew close. Gulping, we blushed as we awkwardly chuckled and pushed the other away.
Y/N: Thanks, Lys. Wouldn't have done me good to tumble down into the floor below. Though I suppose Claude would've gotten a kick out of it.
I smiled as he retained his light sense of humor, defusing the situation effortlessly. Soon, though, I frowned, scolding my best friend.
Lysithea: See? This wouldn't have happened if you had just let me help you!
Y/N simply smiled thinly, holding out his hand. "It was a fluke, Lys. It won't happen again, trust me."
Grumbling, I folded my arms, Y/N carefully making his way down the stairs. In the back of my mind, a quiet, anxious voice began nagging. He was no stranger to coughing fits, but it seemed like they had increased in frequency recently. Could he be...? No. I wouldn't let that happen. It couldn't happen.
Silencing my fears, I ran down the steps, eager to catch up with him.
--Timeskip--
I grit my teeth, swerving around to take down a soldier charging at me with a carefully positioned blast of magic. We had been tasked with quelling a rebellion started by a lord of the kingdom of Faerghus. Things... weren't exactly going well. Our professor had decided to use a tactic that divided us into pairs, putting me with Y/N because of our chemistry.
Unfortunately, while both of us were skilled mages, there was only so much we could do against the seemingly endless tide of enemies.
With my focus on the adversaries in front of me, I failed to notice one of the opposing side's magic users begin to form a fireball to take me out. The warning came too late.
