You weren't at all surprised though.
You lived alone ever since you turned eighteen, desperate for freedom from your strict parents. There also wasn't a gadget on earth that could wake you up from your beauty sleep.

You groggily grabbed your backpack from the shelf, hastily brushing your teeth before grabbing your sneakers and heading out the door.

You didn't bother to look at the mirror, but you probably looked a mess. It didn't really bother you much though. It wasn't like you were really trying to impress anyone.

You cursed silently as you saw the time, glaring at the outside world. there was no way you were gonna make it to school in time. You glanced at the woods to the right of you and a lightbulb lit in your head.

A short cut.

You wandered through the woods, a bit apprehensively. You had been here several times for walks and jogs, but you didn't know exactly where the woods ended and the road began. It also didn't help that you felt like you were being watched.

You walked slowly, the crunch of the autumn leaves filling your ears as you surveyed the area.

Yep. Someone was definitely watching you.

The thought made you uneasy. You continued to walk slowly before pivoting on your head abruptly, expecting to see someone behind you.

Instead, you only heard a shuffle in the bushes, no doubt a squirrel or rabbit. You shrugged nonchalantly, racing the rest of the way to school.

Your senior year of highschool had just begun and you were already counting down the weeks until you could graduate. You didn't realize just how boring school was when you had no one to talk to.

Still, making friends was far too socially draining for you to take up at the moment.

So when lunchtime finally came around, you sat at an empty seat near the back.

There, you noticed a boy your age come out of the lunch line, tentatively scanning the crowd as if trying to find a place to sit. He was tall, with light brown hair and eyes covered by an oversized hoodie he wore.

You smiled. Shy, cute, and mysterious. Just your type.

You waved him over, giving him the name 'Tall guy' in your mind. He froze when he saw you, eyes widening a bit before a ghost of a smile reached his face. Before he could get to you, a gang of boys blocked his path.

"Woah woah woah! Where do you think you're going?" The first guy sounded like he was laughing, draping an arm around the tall guy's shoulders. Everyone in the cafeteria was now staring at them. You groaned internally.

It was the first day of school. There was no way you were going to become the center of attention by intervening. Maybe they didn't see you wave at him? You had to start thinking before you acted.

"I-I was just..." Tall guy stared at you, and you looked away, though for some reason, it irked you to do so.

"Um...er.."

"Um...I-I w-was j-just!" The other guy, obviously a bully, mocked him.

"You're such a pussy, you know that?"

Tall guy had stopped looking at you by then, but the bully and his friends had caught on. He walked over to you, dragging the poor boy along with him.

"This your bitch?" His posse laughed at his joke. "She's kinda hot, in a grumpy, antisocial way." You rolled your eyes at him. It was these types of guys that never failed to piss you off.

"First of all." You didn't care to look up at them as you took a bite out of your apple.

"Even if we were dating, I think you got the roles mixed up. He'd be my bitch."

The guy scoffed in surprise. The tall boy flushed red. They were still laughing. You needed to fix that. You stood up and glared at him.

"You know what? How about we make it official? He's my property now. I don't share." Everyone's eyes were on you now, but you didn't care. You were tired, and bitchy because you had been late. You took Tall guy by his hand and dragged him behind you, smiling at the group.

"So if you really want him, you're gonna have to buy him off me." And with that, you walked out of the lunch room, the boy following behind you as you stormed towards the library.

After talking with the boy for a few hours, you found out that his name was Marcus. The name of the leader of those bullies was Tony, and apparently he'd been the subject of their taunting for years.

You wondered how a person could stand such torment without snapping, but Marcus seemed like a very tolerable person.

"So." You decided to clear the air after a few awkward minutes of silence.

"You aren't upset about what I said earlier, right? About buying you and shit? I don't actually mean it or anything."

Marcus' tapped a pencil to the desk, humming.

"No no, it's fine. I enjoyed it."

Suddenly his face turned tomato-red.

"N-not like that, I just meant-"

He calmed as you gave him a cheeky grin.

"Thank you. For sticking up for me."

"No problem. I don't usually do that for just anyone, so feel special." I laughed as he blushed again at my flirt.

You change the subject, smirking. "How much do you think you're worth anyway? You'd think they'd pay up? I'm kinda broke right now."

He stops tapping his pencil, and you inhale. "Sorry. Stupid question. I don't know how to act sometimes."

"No. It's fine. I don't think i'm worth anything, really." His voice was soft and distant, and you felt a weird tug at your heart strings when he spoke.

"You don't actually believe that?"

"Well...yeah, I do." He sounded so sincere, you frowned. He had his head down, so you tilted it up with a finger under his chin.

He tensed at this, and sharply inhaled once he saw you were staring at him. "Never say that again."

"Why?"

"Don't question me. I'm your owner now. Therefore you do what I say. And I say..." You could feel your lips twitch upward slightly as he ducked his head, hair covering his eyes.

"From this moment forward, I, Y/N, and you Marcus, are besties for life." You let go and smiled brightly, to which he reciprocated.

He suggested you study, so you went into your bag to grab a book. You felt eyes on you again, so you looked up. Sure enough, his warm brown eyes met yours. You faltered. They felt like what had been watching you in the forest. But it couldn't be him. Could it?

"Y/N?"

"Yeah?" You snapped out of your trance.

"You-You're important to me too."

You smiled back at him. Maybe senior year wouldn't be so bad.
