Remus Lupin was nervous. They knew that Sirius Black, James Potter, and Peter Pettigrew were their best friends and they had accepted them for being a werewolf, they had even helped them during their transformations. Remus was grateful to have such loving and accepting friends. But they also knew that coming out to their friends as non-binary wasn't an easy feat. They knew that sooner or later, they would have to tell their friends, and their crazy, stupid, brave Gryffindor side had decided sooner rather than later.
Before telling their brothers, they wanted to tell another one of their best friends, Lily Evans. They knew that Lily would be understanding, but they still were nervous. They had become friends with Lily in their 2nd year. They both had bonded over their love of books, and since then, they both had been close friends. And last year, James had become obsessed with Lily, he had kept pestering Remus about Lily. Lily was not interested at first but they could tell that she had started to fall for the Potter's charm.
Remus was sitting in the library, after dinner on a Wednesday night, waiting for Lily to join them. They had been planning this moment for days, and they did want to tell Lily about themselves, they felt like they owed it to her. Lily had been a good friend to them and they both had talked about the LGBTQ community before. She had been very supportive, although Remus thought that was because she had suspected something. Lily was very observant and Remus was sure she had noticed the way Remus flinched whenever he was associated with the male group of Hogwarts.
Remus had started questioning their gender when they were in their 4th year at Hogwarts. They had subconsciously started noticing whenever anyone referred to them as male and had become annoyed every time it happened. It was also the year when Remus had found out about the LGBTQ community and was instantly curious to know more about it.
They had researched more about gender-related terms and found out that not being comfortable with male or female pronouns was completely normal and that they needn't have everything figured out about themselves yet. The sources that had provided them with the information also advised them to try other pronouns so that they could find out which one they were comfortable with.
Remus had finally landed on they/them, but sometimes they were uncomfortable even with those pronouns. They thought it was very strange and that they would never be normal or find something they were convenient with. They had also felt very alone and had thought about coming out for the first time. After a while, they had had a wave of positive thoughts and then had shaken themselves, thinking that it was okay to not be comfortable with their pronouns. After all, pronouns and gender changes were not things that made a person any less.
Remus smiled at the memory and tried to focus on the transfiguration essay that sat on their table, Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration. They tried to write the five exceptions of the law, but it was really hard to concentrate on their homework now that they had fallen into the pit of memories. They also remembered the time when they had first questioned their sexuality.
It was the summer of their 4th year when they had seen Sirius without his shirt for the first time. Their first thought had been, 'He's so hot,' and they had blushed. But it was true, Sirius Black was very hot, and Remus knew that more than half the female student body of Hogwarts would agree.
Sirius had been a very core part of Remus' bi awakening, but they also knew that Marlene McKinnon had also changed their suspicions about them being gay. They had soon lost interest in Marlene as they had started spending more time with their best friend, but there was no denying the fact that they liked girls too. In their 5th year, Remus was certain that they liked guys as well as girls. This summer, Remus had finally accepted the fact that they had a minor crush on their best friend. Remus was certain that Sirius was not interested in them as he had been avoiding Remus since the beginning of the year. They had allowed themselves to hope that Sirius could've been avoiding them because he was also attracted to Remus, but their hopes had been crushed when Sirius had gone on a date with a Ravenclaw girl.
