Amy's POV
I hate suspense. The feeling of not knowing and staying on the edge of your seat is very stressful to me. That's how I feel as I stare at the Harvard letter, laying on the kitchen counter; a post-it note next to it from my mom says "hopefully, this is good news, sweetheart!" I rub my eyes in frustration and snatch it up; the Harvard emblem shines underneath the sunlight coming through the windows. My phone dings with a message from Mina, my best friend. I ignore it for now, and decide to eat my breakfast before it gets cold.
I've always been interested in Psychology. My mom was happy that I wanted to be a psychologist instead of a doctor like she is. She always says that med school took away the 'best years of her life'; my dad, the lawyer, agrees with her and laughs. My friend Mina and I applied to Harvard at the same time but for different degrees; she wants to study Computer Science like her dad.
I place the letter down on the counter and reach for my phone; Mina asked if I was up for fro-yo later. I smile to myself and send a thumbs up for our 'date' later.
I take a deep breath and open the letter carefully, as to not rip any of the contents inside. It says:
Dear Ms. Park,
it is out pleasure to inform you of your admission to study towards your Master's in Psychology...
I scream and video call Mina; she picks up 3 seconds later with a big smile on her face.
"Did you open your letter already??" I ask. She nods and laughs.
"I was accepted, koibito. Were you?" she asks quietly. I nod and blush. Koibito means 'sweetheart' in Japanese; Mina was born in San Antonio, Texas and lived in Japan for a while before moving back to the United States to pursuit a better education. We met in elementary school and I taught her Korean just for the hell of it; she attempted to teach me Japanese but let's just say I'm not as linguistically inclined as her.
"This is amazing, ae-in. We start in two weeks and we need to start packing." I tell her. Her smile leaves her face and she looks down. I know what she's thinking because we both think about it all the time: how much we will miss both of our families. I give her a small smile and tell her I'll come over in the afternoon.
"Hai, see you later, koibito." She hangs up and I facepalm. I'm so obviously in love with her that it's not even funny. I wonder if she feels the same.
