Running through the halls barefoot was the most freeing feeling to seven year old me. The feeling of my feet slapping against the cold floor. My hair flowing behind me. I remember the chorus of laughter as my brother Max chased behind me as we searched for our siblings. It was a rare moment where our parents allowed us to be children.
It was just a game of hide-and-seek.
Racing down the halls, still laughing. Little lungs still heaving after running; we found Izzy hiding behind a door. "Found you Sissy!" I call out, a small chuckle escaping my lips. "You sure did! Now let's go find Alec!" She replied. The biggest smile spread across her face.
It was such a care free day.
With that the three of us took off in search of our eldest brother. Being the oldest and a fair bit older than the rest of us; Alec was a fair bit smarter. Which made it difficult for the three of us to find him. "Let's try the green house." I suggested. The green house was a great place to hide. "It would be hard for us to find Alec there." I thought.
"That's a pretty good idea Jeri." Max said.
"Yeah, let's split up when we get there. We can cover more ground and find him quicker that way." Izzy agreed.
At the time it was a solid idea. In hindsight; not so much.
The three of us split ways upon our entrance into the green house. Max running down the center, Izzy taking the far right and me taking the far left. Our plan was that whoever would find Alec would call out and we would all meet back at the entrance.
If only things had gone to plan.
Taking off on my path, my bare feet slapping the floor. I only got about halfway down the greenhouse before something grabbed me. I didn't even have time to scream before eveything went black.
I never knew which of my other two siblings found Alec.
I know they never were able to find me.
