I fidgeted with the keys on the chain, trying to find the correct one to open the door, finding it after a few failed attempts, I turned the doorknob, gently opening the deep brown wooden door.
My legs moved on their own, stepping into the small cottage that I'd bought the month prior, the wooden floor creaked underfoot, having been deprived of human contact for many a moon. A sigh escaped me, knowing that living here would be a huge change from the city, "This isn't what I'm used to, so the adjusting may be strange.." I mumbled to nobody, then stepping fully into the cabin, looking around at the simple green wallpaper in the living room, a fireplace on the wall to my left. A scream came from behind me, turning around almost instantly, I saw my friend Vanessa coming up the stairs to the porch, a large box in her hands. "Move it, we gotta start unpacking!" She said, grinning. I stepped out of the way carefully, watching her come in and place the box gently on the floor. I nodded to her, signing that now was the time to unload the moving van and unpack the boxes. She nodded back, a stupid smile spreading across her face, "Let's get to work then!" Her and I had been best friends since elementary school, never keeping secrets, helping no matter what, but her helping me move so far away was by far the wildest thing we'd done together. "Thanks again, Vanny." I said, while we lifted a heavy couch frame into the doorway. "Don't question it.." she said, grunting as we carried the massive peice of furniture inside. We spent the rest of the day moving furniture and organizing boxes to rooms, by the time everything was ready for me to actually live in the place, the sun has long since disappeared from the sky of the afternoon prior. Van and I had collapsed onto the couch, a fire crackling a distance away, the orange hands of spirits reaching upwards to be free from their eternal heat. "I hope this new place treats you well." She said, standing up and stretching her sore muscles. "Thanks a ton Vanny, I really appreciate it." I said, standing to give her a hug as a thanks for her assistance in moving. "Well, it's time for me to head off." She said, ending the hug with her hands on my shoulders, "Have fun here for me, loser!" She said, a crack in her voice, and tears in her eyes then hugging me again. "I will, I swear." I said, tearing up slightly, "I'll miss you." I said, hugging her tighter. "I'll miss you too." She said, then letting go again. "I gotta head home, text me in the morning okay?" She demanded a pitch of sadness in her voice.
"Of course I will." I promised, as we said our goodbyes, watching the white and orange moving truck pull away, into the clearing of trees leading to a faraway road. "Bye Van, I'll see you again soon." I said, then walking back into my new home, closing the door behind me. That's when the howls started.
