✿Chapter 29: Be Very Afraid✿

Start from the beginning

"Ruddiger?" Varian said as you both followed a small shadow down the alley, "Hey! Come back here!" As you turned around the corner, you noticed that the thing you were both following was not Ruddiger. It was actually a very ugly cat.

Varian and you then turned around to find a petrified Ruddiger, "Ruddiger?" You called, stepping towards the animal.

"Hey, buddy. We were looking for you." Varian walked over to the raccoon and kneeled down in front of it, "W-what are you-" He waved his hand in front of the raccoon's face, "H-hello? What's- what's wrong?" He asked, picking up Ruddiger.

Suddenly you heard a crash behind you. As soon as you spun around, and saw the red rocks sprouting up around you, you heard a voice, "I used you! Both of you!" This wasn't just any voice. It was Varian's, he had said that when he stole the flower.

You spun around to face him, to take a good look at him. Realizing that he was still here and that the thoughts in your mind were just an illusion, "I'm afraid Corona will pay for turning their backs on me." You shut your eyes tight, blinking away the fear, remembering that Varian was back by your side.

"(Y/N)?" Varian called, tucking Ruddiger under one arm and placing a hand on your shoulder, "You okay?" He asked softly.

You looked up at him, "Yeah, I-I'm fine." You paused, looking at all the rocks, "We should probably find Rapunzel.

The two of you took a couple of minutes and finally found Rapunzel and Eugene, Varian held up Ruddiger and scared your sister.

"Sorry! Sorry, just me." Varian said apologetically. Eugene seemed to take note of your entwined hands, "Hi. And, (Y/N), and, uh... Ruddiger. Kinda." Varian placed Ruddiger down on a barrel still holding your hand. It was clear he was nervous about the whole situation.

Rapunzel leaned over to get a good look at the animal, "Varian, is he okay? What happened." Pascal hopped over and tapped against the raccoon's head.

"Uh, I'm not quite sure..." He glanced over at the rocks, "But I think it has something to do with these new rocks. I mean, I've only been able to study them for a few hours, but their effects appear to be extremely dangerous." Varian carefully let go of your hand, patting Ruddiger on the back.

Eugene looked extremely distressed, "Oh yeah? More dangerous than bringing people's greatest fears to life?"

So that's what it was. Your greatest fear was Varian turning bad again. Varian took a glance at you, noticing your shocked expression, before continuing to speak.

"Yes, well, if people remain under that fear spell for too long, it looks like they'll become frozen with terror permanently." He said before carefully picking up Ruddiger.

Rapunzel put her hands on her hips, "Well, gang, then it sounds to me like we need to find a way to turn these fearful frowns upside down!" She said before trying to make Ruddiger smile. It just made him look even more terrifying, "Okay, yup. Sorry. That just wound up making him look creepier."

You and Varian stood next to the rocks, him examining them and you trying to block the voices out.

"You are merely bait-" You covered your ears, but that didn't stop them. Varian's voice filled your ears with dark twisted words. This isn't real, the real Varian is right in front of you inspecting a rock, back to his normal, dorky, self. You opened your eyes, expecting to see Varian, it didn't take you long to notice that he was gone. You took your hands off your ears and turned around, frantically looking for the boy.
