It had been a few years since the devastating battle at the X-CORP Foundation. The fight against SILO had left scars deeper than the physical wounds Tim Murphy could ever show. His apartment, once filled with laughter and the chaotic energy of brothers-in-arms, was now suffocatingly silent. The absence of Jake and Alex echoed through every corner of the place, a ghostly reminder of the price they had paid.
Tim sat alone in the dimly lit room, the only light coming from the flickering screen of his P.A. device. His fingers trembled slightly as he brushed over a small photo frame on the table—a snapshot of the three of them, smiling and carefree, long before the shadows of war had settled over their lives. The memories clawed at him, bittersweet and relentless.
He hadn't allowed himself to grieve properly. Not fully. The weight of leadership, the burden of surviving when his closest friends didn't, gnawed at his sanity. Some nights, he barely slept, caught in a torment of nightmares—visions of the battle replaying in merciless detail. The sound of Alex's last breath, Jake's eyes wide in shock as SILO struck, the feeling of helplessness as Tim tried to save them both.
Often, Tim woke drenched in sweat, gasping for air, heart pounding as if SILO's shadow still loomed over him. The PTSD twisted his mind; every unexpected noise made him flinch, every shadow made him tense. He found himself constantly scanning his surroundings, suspecting that SILO might somehow have survived, watching, waiting to strike again.
His paranoia wasn't unfounded—SILO's powers had been unlike anything they'd ever faced. The black hole that had nearly sucked them into oblivion, the mimic ability that stole powers in an instant. Even in death, the threat felt alive in Tim's mind. He kept his weapons close, his shadow manipulation ready at a moment's notice. Trust was a fragile thing now.
The world outside moved on. But for Tim, time had frozen. His heart ached with the loss of his brothers, and his spirit felt hollow.
A soft beep from the P.A. device pulled him back to the present. Tim stared at the screen, blinking away the heaviness in his eyes.
"DING!" the device chimed insistently.
Tim sat upright, shaking off the lingering fog of his grief.
"I got to hurry back now. It was great seeing you again!" he said aloud, his voice hoarse from disuse. He hadn't spoken much these days, words feeling empty.
His footsteps echoed through the empty apartment as he grabbed his coat and keys.
"P.A., what is the issue we have now?" Tim asked, voice steadying with a mix of curiosity and fatigue.
"The Time Authorities want to meet you, sir," the device replied in its calm mechanical tone.
Tim froze.
"The Time Authorities exist?" he questioned, disbelief mixing with a flicker of hope.
"Indeed, sir," the P.A. confirmed.
"Well then, I got to hurry back now. Where's the location at?" Tim pressed.
"They are already at your house waiting for you, sir," it answered.
Within moments, Tim was driving towards his home. Despite the years away, his mind raced—what did the Time Authorities want? Why now? And why him, the last surviving member of the trio?
Pulling up to the familiar front door, Tim noticed a group of figures standing silently—dressed in sleek uniforms, their presence imposing and otherworldly.
"Mr. Murphy, it's nice to finally meet you face to face," said one of them, stepping forward.
Tim squinted, taking in the stranger's face.
"And who might you be?" he asked cautiously.
"Well, that's the thing with us working in the Time Authority," the figure replied. "We have no names; we just simply call ourselves by codes. So, I'm FN-21."
Tim raised an eyebrow. "That's complicated to remember. What about if I just call you Finn?"
"Alrighty," Finn smiled faintly.
"So, what brings you here today?" Tim inquired.
"We need you to come with us," Finn said, voice serious.
"Why?" Tim asked, tension rising in his chest.
"We'll talk more at the Time Authority Agency," Finn replied.
Tim's heart thudded. "Prepare for yourself," Finn said suddenly.
"Prepare for what?" Tim demanded.
"WOAH—" Tim barely had time to react before a brilliant flash engulfed him.
When the light dimmed, Tim found himself somewhere completely unfamiliar—an ethereal facility unlike anything on Earth.
"Where are we?" Tim gasped.
"Tim, welcome to the Time Authority Facility Agency," Finn said calmly.
"Come, let's take a walk while we talk about the issue we have," Finn invited, leading Tim down endless corridors shimmering with lights.
"We've been getting multiple problems across the multiverse, and those problems lead to you, Tim," Finn explained.
Tim's brows furrowed. "Wait, how come I'm the problem?"
"You and your friends, Jake Ross and Alex Brooks, created the device. You guys named it 'Project Quantum'—to us, it's hilarious because it has nothing to do with quantum physics."
Tim's lips tightened. "It was just a project that we did."
"Well, you see, you guys were not destined to make the device. You are a nexus event," Finn revealed.
"Not destined? Nexus event? What do you mean?" Tim asked, a chill creeping up his spine.
"It means you have made your impossible destiny. We in the Time Authority Agency, or TAA for short, are supposed to write your destiny."
Tim shook his head in disbelief. "Hold on. So all the stuff that we did, the choices we made—they weren't our own?"
"Yes, that is correct."
Finn's eyes darkened. "We have detected that one of our Time Authority agents went rogue and decided to let you all choose your own path in the nexus timeline."
"So why am I here?" Tim asked.
"You are here to help us get that rogue Time Authority agent and capture him. Bring him to us," Finn said with grave intensity.
Tim's pulse quickened. "You have a bunch of employees here, and you decided to pick me?"
"We chose you because you know him better than we do."
Tim blinked, confused. "I know him?"
"Yes."
"Who is it then?"
"You'll get to see him when you see him yourself," Finn said mysteriously.
Tim swallowed hard. "Where do I start then?"
"You will start two days before the death of Alex Brooks. October 29th. Prepare yourself. If anything happens, use this device to communicate with us," Finn said, handing Tim a sleek device that pulsed softly in his palm.
Tim nodded, steeling himself for what was to come.
As they prepared to send him back, his mind flashed to those haunting memories—the laughter, the fights, the bonds—and the unbearable losses. Could he really face it all again? Could he save them? Or was this fate inescapable?
The Time Authority's corridor shimmered once more.
Tim closed his eyes.
