Wanting Is Never Enough

Chapter 1: Six Years

Hi guys, I decided to take up another story and I have some new ideas for this one. I hope you guys like it and are interested to read more. Good luck and enjoy.

The building was an old one, the age making it look like a ruin almost. Footsteps were heard, maintaining a soft but steady rhythm. Jay Halstead was walking with his partner towards the sounds at the back of the building. His gun was drawn, his eyes fixed ahead of him. After a few moments they spotted two people, their backs facing them. He immediately realised one of them was a woman, strangely familiar to him. He looked at his partner and nodded, and his partner screamed, "Hands up! Turn around slowly!"

The two figures ahead of them froze, not because they were afraid but because they were caught by surprise. Jay's partner continued, "Put your damn hands in the air and turn around slowly!"

There was no scope of recognising either of them in this state as they were both wearing masks and hoodies, covering their faces and entire heads.

"Turn around!" the voice repeated.

This time they did, raising their gloved hands. The guy was bigger than the woman beside him. They shared a quick glance that both Jay and his partner couldn't decipher. But suddenly something utterly unexpected happened. Blue met green. Jay was staring at the woman in front of him, whose face was completely masked, but its eyes didn't betray him. He was sure of what he was seeing but he couldn't voice it. He was pointing a gun at Hailey Upton.

Hailey had recognised Jay the moment she had turned, using all her strength not to collapse or react in an explicit manner. She had locked eyes with him, the way they used to before. A part of her was relieved that nothing disastrous would occur now, but she couldn't take it for granted that he would recognise her.

But things were going to go downhill. Her partner suddenly pulled out a gun and pointed it towards their offenders. Jay's partner screamed, "Put your gun down, or I will shoot you!"

He didn't oblige making the man yell again, "This is your last warning. Drop the gun and get on your knees!"

But before anything more could happen Jay was leaning in towards his partner and whispering something. It was Hailey's partner's turn to speak now, "We're cops."

Jay had told his partner the same thing, but he was still hesitant to lower his gun. Hailey reached for her mask and pulled it over her head, her hoodie slipping off as well. Her blonde hair cascaded down her shoulders, revealing a face that Jay had seen almost six years ago. He was staring at her not sure what he was feeling, for a moment forgetting all his surroundings. She had no particular expression on her face, but the intensity with which she was staring back at him was staggering. Her partner followed suit and all four of them checked each other's batches, relieved that no one had fired.

After the necessary steps were taken Hailey walked off, not waiting for her partner even. She had not uttered a single word, just done what was required of her. Jay stared after her, still unsure of what he felt or how he should react. He too had not spoken a word.

The rest of the day went by in trying to brainstorm to create a better plan to bust this drug dealer, who it seemed was a dangerous one. All these cops were undercover, working for months, gathering intel, observing and reporting back.

A new plan was set in motion and the execution was to be done the following day. Hailey was in her UC apartment, trembling slightly. She had not seen Jay for almost six years and suddenly seeing him like this brought about emotions that she had long buried. She was seated on her couch, holding her hands tightly, trying to deal with this new stress. Suddenly there was a knock at her door, startling her out of her thoughts. She assumed it would be her partner and casually went to open the door. As she opened the door, she froze, her breath hitched and she looked straight into green eyes. Jay was standing in front of her, looking at her expressionless. They stayed like that for a moment then Jay spoke finally, "Hailey."
