HARRY POV
I was disappointing myself. I was not prepared at all for the upcoming task. I had managed to figure out what is was, but not without help from Cedric Diggory.
It was the night before the task and I was freaking out. I had no plan, no ideas, I was out. The others likely had at least an idea. I was at the library at 9:00 at night trying to figure out what the hell I was gonna do. It's not like I could just drop out of the tournament.
I was at my wit's end and about to give up when I heard a 'pop' sound. I looked to my right, and there stood Dobby the House Elf.
"Dobby has been watching, sir. Dobby thinks sir is tired and needs a break. Please tell Dobby what's bothering him." Dobby spoke politely and soft, as if he was afraid he might spook me.
"I just can't find something I need. I'll be fine, really, Dobby" I replied dismissively.
"Please, sir, tell Dobby what you need. Dobby can help!!"
"Alright, fine. I need to figure out a way to breathe underwater for a while. Be quiet, though. No one else can know" I reluctantly gave in to his pestering. I drifted to sleep when the 'pop' signaling Dobby's exit died in my ears.
~~~~~~~~Timeskip~~~~~~~~
The next morning I took a long time to get ready. Even though it made no difference, I wanted to feel like I was prolonging going into the lake. I made my way down to breakfast at about 8:00. Only an hour and a half till my doom.
The Great Hall was mostly silent because everyone felt bad for the competitors. I wasn't hungry, but I went anyway to be with Hermione and Ron before the second task. As soon as I sat down, they started flooding my ears with questions.
"Did you figure out what the second task was?" Hermione was the first to ask, Ron being momentarily distracted by a pancake.
"Yes" I answered curtly. I loved my friends, but sometimes, especially in the mornings, they were too much.
Hermione took the hint and closed her mouth. Using that opportunity, I turned my attention elsewhere. Specifically to watching Draco Malfoy. I was cautious, nothing else.
I began to drift into my thoughts about the task ahead of me. Even though I had little reason to believe it, I hoped Dobby would return in time with an answer to my dilemma.
Oh shit. I jumped up with realization. I had forgotten to tell Dobby what time I needed a solution to my problem.
"Harry! Are you alright, mate?" Ron asked, noticing my frantic expression. I waved him off and ran from the Great Hall.
I let my feet carry me wherever they wanted me to go. Apparently they wanted to go to the ROR. I paced back and forth to summon the door. When I walked in, I noticed that there were bookshelves all around me, all piled high with literature on swimming.
~~~~~~Timeskip~~~~~~
45 minutes had passed and I was no closer to a solution. The competitors were required at the docks by 9:00 and it was 8:55. I had to hurry.
By the time I got to the docks, it was 8:58. I was almost exactly on time, which was impressive for me. To my surprise, as I was walking over to where we were supposed to meet, I saw a small figure waiting for me.
"Dobby is very sorry, sir." Dobby started hyperventilating, getting really worked up.
"Deep breaths, Dobby. Deep breaths" I calmed him down enough to speak to him. "What happened?"
"Dobby told Master Draco. Of sir's problem. Dobby is sorry. Master Draco made Dobby give this Gillyweed to sir now." Dobby explained quickly. He spoke so fast, I almost couldn't make out what he was saying. Draco helped me? That couldn't be right. No. It didn't matter anyway. I had to go.
"Thanks, Dobby!" I hurried off to where everyone was getting ready to dive, the Gillyweed that Draco supposedly got me clutched in my fist.
