The air is so cold it almost feels like fire, Braylyn thought as she sulked her way out of the library. The building just closed and she had been there since the very second it opened. Bray hates being at her house longer than she has to she especially when her dad gets home from the local pub.  Thankfully today her dad has a bowling competition down Kentucky, so he won't be back for a couple of days.

Braylyn lives in Homestead, Ohio, and not much happens around the small town. They don't even have a police unit the town is so small, and because of this, there is a whole lot of crime. Not that Bray minded at all she knew that if anything happened to her it really wouldn't matter. You see her mom died when she was 8 and her dad is an abusive drunk, her boyfriend, well it's safe to say that he would be a whole lot happier if she were dead.

Samuel Smith is the name of Bray's toxic boyfriend of 9 months. Samuel is 19 and quickly Braylyn found out why all of his past girlfriends moved far away. She really didn't want to go out with him, but she was forced into it by people whom she thought were her friends at the time. Eventually, the friends stopped talking to her and after 2 months she longed to break up with him, but he threatened her with the only thing she really cared about, her puppy. Gerome, a pitbull puppy she found out in the snow a couple of months ago. She took him in and grew attached almost instantly.

Braylyn reaches her house, it about 7:30. The walk from the library is only about 10 minutes from the short route, but she ops to take a long way so it adds 20 minutes. Opening the door, which is never locked, she steps into her dark house. To Brays left there is a light switch, which she takes a little too long to find and flip on. The house is a wreck, with empty beer cases, shattered glass, rotten food, and every kind of fast food bag you can find. Since her dad is drunk almost 24/7 he orders food instead of cooking it.  Well, he orders food for himself and he punches her in the stomach whenever she asks for anything. So she tends to fend for herself, and thankfully the librarians help her out with the food situation.

She rushes into her room rather quickly making sure not to breathe in the stench of rot. Braylyn's room is a lot cleaner than the rest of the house, but it's still rather cluttered. She heaves a sigh of relief as she flops on her bed. It's an old raggedy bed but it's all she has, and there is no way in hell she is going to ask her father for a new one. Her room is the smallest in the entirety of the house, there aren't even any windows. The space is big enough for a twin-sized bed, an old wooden desk, a chair, and a small rug, other than that she has a small closet space. While she absolutely hated this place with a raging passion, this was her home.

Bray's mid-length brown hair flows over her shoulder, as she untucks it from the inside of the hoodie she just put on.  She pulls out an old phone she gotten when she was 7 and puts on some music. Just then her puppy Gerome wakes up and stumbles out from under her bed. The puppy likes to sleep there whenever she is gone. Braylyn brings Gerome to the library most days, but today Gerome was extra tired, so she put out food and water and left before her dad woke up.

So, Braylyn is sitting on her bed listening to her music when she realizes there is a note on her desk that shouldn't be there. Slowly, she rises and walks to her desk. She picks up the sealed envelope and pulls it open. Tears rush down her face as she realizes who wrote the letter. Bray reads the letter out loud the second time.

"Your real lucky I couldn't find your damn dog I know that he wasn't with you today".
