And I had slept with him.
Despite my worry, he didn't look mad, and reached a gloved hand out to squeeze my shoulder. "I'm glad you're ok," he said softly. I nodded, still reeling, unable to speak. "Please come in and sit, I need to talk to you about what we found. Maya, you can stay with her."
I stepped past him into the room, and stopped in my tracks. Perched on the corner of the desk, one foot on the floor for balance, sat a pretty brunette. She had one pink streak running through her hair, and was wearing tight white high-waisted pants, with a pink crop top and pink shoes that matched the streak. She stared at me wordlessly with her blue eyes as I came in.
Maya ran past me and embraced her warmly. "Y/N, this is Rox, one of my agents," Midas said. It annoyed me the way he annunciated her name with his accent. She gave me an unenthusiastic wave, which I returned. The way she was sat atop the desk so casually hinted that her and Midas had known each other awhile.
I bet she's slept with him, too.
I shuffled over to the same chair I sat in the day he'd questioned me, and Maya took the empty chair to my left. The pain medicine Remedy had given me was kicking in, thankfully, relaxing me slightly.
Rox kept her eyes glued to Midas as he walked around her, taking his seat opposite us at the desk. I couldn't blame her, I could barely take my eyes off of him either.
He sighed, leaning forward on his elbows on the desktop, lacing his fingers together. "This isn't going to be easy to hear," he spoke, looking at me intently, causing my nerves to kick in again. Maya took my left hand, careful not to hurt my finger.
"The body we took out of the duct, we think she was like you. She had the same...mark on her chest, and was wearing all black. We think she may have been placed there, as a warning." He watched me, trying to gauge my reaction.
I was frozen in terror, trying not to cry. The proximity of the body to my room couldn't have been an accident. Not only did they know that I was in the Agency, they knew where my room was. I had assumed it was maybe another bounty hunter that had gotten stuck in the vent, which wasn't a whole lot better, but this was too much.
A fellow Stalker, who'd undoubtedly lived as hard of a life as I had, killed for no other reason than to scare me. It was my fault she'd died. I had run away, and they were punishing me for it. Letting me know that none of our lives mattered, and they weren't going to stop until they'd taken my life as well. And now I was putting everyone at the Agency's lives in danger.
I should just turn myself in and be done with this.
"We don't yet know how they managed to get in," Midas continued, "we have security all around the perimeter. We're getting concerned it was an inside job, especially considering this wasn't even the first breach this week."
He was referring to the bounty hunter I'd walked in on him torturing. Maya was stroking my hand again, my breathing uneven.
"I'm calling in some of my field agents that have been gone on assignment to look into it. In the meantime, I think it best if we get you somewhere else safe. I'm sending you to the Shark. One of my best agents, Skye, resides there and she will take good care of you. Shadow wouldn't dare attack it. Rox can accompany you tomorrow." He said it so casually, as if sending me away were no big deal to him. Just business.
The blood drained out of my face, and I felt my heart break into a thousand tiny pieces. He was getting rid of me. He'd gotten what he wanted, and he didn't want to see me anymore. I saw Maya look at me, brows knit together in concern, knowing what I must be thinking. Rox sat there silently, just watching everything unfold. At least she could come back and keep him company after escorting me out.
