He let out a slight chuckle, seemingly unsure whether or not I was joking. "True," he said, grabbing the leash. "Well, you have a good night."
"Yep, same," I said, watching him walk away. The relief was just starting to settle in when he slowed his pace and turned back towards me.
Fuck.
"Hey," he said, "are you ok?"
"Whatever would make you think I wasn't?" I replied, somewhat sarcastically.
"I mean, not to be offensive or anything, but there's sand and dirt literally all over one side of your head. Have you been sleeping here?"
"I took a nap," I snapped back at him.
A look of pity crossed his face. "So you passed out? Hey, listen...I know that Slurp stuff is everywhere right now, but you know there's help available, right? I know a great addiction recovery specialist right here in Sweaty Sands."
Ahh, so that was it. He thought I was on drugs. Not entirely off the mark, at least until my supply ran out. It just didn't happen to be the reason I passed out this time.
"Welp, you got me. What can I say?"
He reached into a pocket and pulled out his wallet, removing a card and reaching it out to me. "Here's the number of that doctor. Try to get some help."
"Sure," I said, reaching and taking the card from his hand. I'd literally tell him anything at this point to make him go away.
"Here, let me help you up." He reached down and grabbed my arm.
"Don't you fucking touch me!!" I yelled out, a lot louder than I intended to. He let go and jumped back, a little shocked. My heart felt like it was going to pound out of my chest. "I can help myself. Goodnight," I said, dismissing him.
"Fine," he said, with a bit of a scowl. "Don't drown out here." He walked off, not at all knowing how close I recently came to doing just that. After he was almost out of sight I flicked the card into the sand beside me.
No doctor can help me right now.
I had to move. Even though it was unlikely that I'd see someone else since it was now dark, I needed fresh water, and to tend to my wound. And I could use a better place to hide.
I tried standing, to no avail. The pain from my abdominal wound was accompanied by multiple bruises across my body, and a dull throbbing between my legs. These, combined with the weakness from the blood loss, were enough to keep me from standing, let alone walking.
Unless...
I reached into the inside left pocket of my black cargo vest, feeling the small case tucked within. A sense of relief washed over me as I realized I still had it in my possession.
I pulled the case out and unzipped it, revealing six small vials of a bright blue liquid.
Only six. Shit. That won't last me long.
It's not that I particularly wanted to continue using the drugs, I just knew what I would go through when I ran out. It wasn't pretty, and I had enough to deal with at the moment. Not to mention that I might just lay here and die without it.
I pulled out a vial and unscrewed the top, bringing it to my lips. The familiar sweet smell wafted up, and I quickly poured the liquid into my mouth and swallowed.
It was sweet at first, but the aftertaste was quite bitter. No matter. I wouldn't care what it tasted like in a couple of minutes.
I tossed the empty vial into the ocean, and placed the zipped case back into my vest pocket.
