The single mother walks into her apartment struggling with her groceries, to see Alex with his headphones in while watching on his laptop while she wonders where Andrea is.
"Alex. Alex, help"
after she says that the pre-teen doesn't reply, she takes toilet paper rolls from the bag and throws them at his head, Alex turns around insulted.
"Papito, let's go! you know I got a bum shoulder."
the pre-teen stands up to help while still holding the laptop.
"I need help over here"
Alex sits back down and goes back to what he was doing
"thank you. Next time ill skype you" the Cuban mother says flabbergasted
As she says that the curtains get dramatically opened by an older Cuban woman who has a strong accent and says.
"We have a problem" "I know. the hipsters have discovered Porto's line around the block like the freakin' Apple store now"
Penelope replies back.
"Mum!" Penelope's oldest kid Elena yells as her younger sister Andrea comes running after her.
"I tried" panted Andrea
"And this one" Lydia points to Elena " I don't like her anymore"
"I don't care if you like me," says Elena
"sounds like your both on the same page" Penelope points out
Andrea goes to sit on the couch next to Alex and watches what he's doing as Lydia says,
"Your daughter does not want to have quinces."
"what? why? we already booked the room and I found a great band!" the single mother calls out from the kitchen.
Lydia and Elena look at her
"Okay, it's a deejay, Okay it's Alex and Andrea with an iPod and a playlist"
"buts it a very good playlist" Andrea calls out while her mother points at her and says
"see!"
"I researched the of quinceaneras and found out they're totally misogynistic" Explains Elena
Lydia turns to Penelope
"She's been reading again. why do you let her read?"
"I know Mami. I let her do math, too. I'm a monster."
Elena turns to her mother "by the way, they made me captain of the debate team today at school"
"NERD!" Andrea yells
Penelope smiles proudly at her oldest daughter but also scowls at her youngest daughter before Elena continues
"but all she wants to talk about is this" pointing out her grandmother
"She has to have a quinces, how else will we know the day that our little girl becomes a woman?" Lydia exclaims
"You missed it. I was 12, I was in gym, and ironically, it happened in first period." Elena snarkily replies
"you are throwing away your Cuban heritage"
"yeah, the bad part. I don't want to be paraded around in front of the men of the village like a piece of property to be traded for two cows and a goat" Elena explains
"Someone thinks they're worth a lot"
"OOH burn from Abuelita" Andrea exclaims
"What century do you two think you're in? I mean, Elena, relax. it's just a fun party. you know, I have a little too much wine, embarrass you while I sob during my toast, uh, Abuelita will dance inappropriately dance with one of your guy friends--"
"you can count on it" cuts in Lydia while she shimmies her shoulders
"I'm not doing it" Elena informs
"ay ay ay this family" Andrea exclaims
Lydia turns to Penelope " you need to do something about this little sinvergüenza"
" what does that even mean?" Elena complains
"it means"Lydia points to Andrea
"that you don't know enough Spanish to know she's insulting you" Andrea explains
Lydia point for Andrea to come over and taps Alex on the shoulder
"oye... tu hermana no sabe la plabra sinvergüenza" Lydia says
"Ha! oye, que tento!" Alex replies
"estupida" Andrea says
