It was a gorgeous morning when David awoke, as the sun shined in through his bedroom window. Unfortunately, the reason behind his awakening was not the light, or his alarm clock, but instead the ringing of a phone on his nightstand. David picked up the phone and gave a scratchy, "Hello?"
"Oh, David! Isn't it just absolutely lovely outside?" David sighed, as he knew the only person who would call him early in the morning was the zany Susan Vance. "Oh, David, I just wish you were here this morning. I'm ordering a big breakfast to celebrate this lovely weather. Oh, David, please join me!"
"Susan, you know I've got to work today."
"Oh, it'll be quick David! Just a light breakfast that'll take no time at all. I swear." Even though Susan had contradicted herself, she sounded eager for David to eat with her. While David might've said no when he had first met Susan, they had grown to know each other. He knew saying no to Susan would only create a larger problem.
"Fine. I'll be there at quarter to 9, Susan." David could feel that on the other side of the phone, Susan was smiling at her success.
"Oh, I'm so excited David! We'll have a splendid breakfast, I promise! Now, don't you worry. You just get ready for work and I'll be right here waiting."
"Alright, goodbye Susan." David quickly set the phone down and left his bedroom for his bathroom. David was organized, so Susan entering his life had caused adapting to a not-at-all-scheduled life. Before Susan, David would wake up at exactly 7 a.m., enjoy a cup of coffee with a piece of buttered toast, and get dressed in his finest for work every morning. Now, David was shamed for waking up earlier than 8, breakfast was an adventurous meal, and all his best outfits were getting destroyed on accident by his chaotic girlfriend. Still, with all the mayhem that had occurred since David met Susan, he wouldn't trade those moments for anything.
After preparing for the day, David left the house wearing a black suit, ready for a day of work. He left his apartment building and walked down the street to where Susan's humble abode was located. As he walked up the stairs to her apartment, thoughts of what could happen during breakfast ran through David's brain. While dread was always filling David's head before seeing Susan, spending time with her made any day much more lively. When he arrived at her apartment, the same one where Baby had stayed for a short time, David knocked.
"Susan! I'm here!" Before getting to finish his sentence, Susan had opened the door. She greeted David with a large smile before kissing him on the lips. David wasn't expecting such a welcoming and kissed her before she moved back to talk.
"I knew you'd make it! I just knew it! David, I missed you!" Susan's smile was huge as she looked at her handsome boyfriend.
"Susan, you just saw me yesterday."
"Oh, I know, but I can still miss you, can't I?" She wrapped her arms around David, smiling. David reciprocated the action before looking inside the apartment.
"Now, why is there so much food?" David frowned as he looked around. "This is enough to feed the entire apartment building."
"Why, it's not that much David!" In fact, it was that much. Platters of food were scattered across every table. Why Susan had ordered this abundance of food, David hadn't the slightest clue.
"Are you trying to make me late for work again?" Susan softly chuckled at the accusation.
"Gee, David, of course not. Why would I do that? Come sit down." After spending time with Susan, David could tell whether not she was lying. In this case, she was lying.
"Oh, alright." David somewhat reluctantly sat down on the couch at Susan's apartment. He grabbed a croissant that was on a tray in front of him. As he started nibbling, Susan started talking.
"How about a weekend trip to Connecticut? We get to visit Baby and George and Aunt Elizabeth. We'll have a ball, David!" David swallowed his bite of croissant before answering.
"Oh, I don't know Susan. Work has been so hectic lately with all the new paperwork coming back from the neighbor branch." Since the incident with the Brontosaurus skeleton was destroyed by Susan, David was swiftly fired from the museum. It seemed that giving the museum a million dollars was overshadowed by the wreckage David's crazy girlfriend had caused. Being unemployed was not fitting for David. He always needed to be doing something or else he'd grow bored and depressed. David picked up a job at a corporate office, quite different from his previous job at the museum. No museum would hire him after the news of the Brontosaurus had spread. Now, while David was thankful he had a job, he was nowhere near as happy as he'd be if he was working in the field of paleontology.
"David, let me take us on this trip to Connecticut. I'm the reason you lost that job at the museum! I know how dearly you loved that job too." Guilt washed over Susan. They rarely discussed the fact that Susan was the reason behind David's termination. Susan had felt awful since the very beginning and had constantly apologized to him.
"Susan, I'd choose you over that job at the museum any day. A trip to Connecticut sounds lovely." Susan smiled brightly and gave David a big hug. David returned the gesture by wrapping his arms around her and giving her a genuine smile. As serious and organized as David was, sometimes he had to let the little things go and focus on what laid ahead. Yes, David lost his job due to Susan, but a future with Susan kept him optimistic.
"Oh, David, I couldn't be more excited even if I tried! We're going to have a ball in Connecticut, just wait!" She jumped out of his arms, but as Susan was Susan, she bumped into the tray with the croissants, causing the tray to clatter as it hit the floor. Susan stumbled backward a bit and ended up slipping on the silver tray that had held the freshly baked croissants. "Ooooh! David!" Susan said as she tried to catch her balance.
"I've got you, Susan!" David stood up, ready to help her regain her balance. Unfortunately, David slipped on a croissant resting on the floor and fell backward onto the ground. Susan had lost her battle with the croissant tray and fell right on top of David.
"Why, hello there." Susan said to David, looking at his face. Her head laid on David's chest while the rest of her body laid on top of his body.
"Oh, now I'm really late!" David sat up, accidentally pushing Susan, causing her to fall backward onto the floor. He quickly picked her up and set her on the couch. After kissing her on her cheek, David got his briefcase and headed towards the door. "I'll see you after work, Susan!"
"Remember to take the rest of the week off for Connecticut David!" Susan said as he closed the door to her apartment. Once David left, Susan sighed happily and said to herself, "Oh, how I love him."
