"The only way out is to run." I whispered, turning back toward him. "For us to leave this place, for us to be married, for us to never come back." I could feel the tears coming back as I spoke and Daniel came forward to comfort me.
"Regina..." He said, "Do you understand what that would mean?" He looked me in the eyes and clasped my hands within his. "Life with a stableboy is a far cry from life as queen."
"Being queen means nothing." I spoke truly. "Daniel...all I care about is you." I brought my hands up to frame his face and he stroked them with his own.
He kissed my finger as it crossed his mouth. "Then if I am to marry you, we must do this properly." I gasped as he walked away and toward his saddle. A smile came to my face as he tore off a ring from the leatherwork and came back over to me. He carefully slipped off the Kings ring and replaced it with his. He dropped the other ring onto the straw underfoot. "Here." He said and I gave a small chuckle as he pulled me into a kiss. We could do this. We could make it away. If we left now, my mother wouldn't know until it was too late. The only person I would miss would be my father, but he would understand why I had left.
I looked into Daniels eyes. "We must leave now." I told him urgently. "We must not give my mother time to find out about our plans." He nodded his head as I spoke.
"I'm ready if you are." He told me, smiling at me. I nodded and laughed. I could finally be happy. I could finally be free. He grabbed up his sack of things and took my hand.
"Are you ready?" He asked, sounding excited. I smiled back and nodded as he leaned down to kiss me.
"Let's go!" I said and we ran out the door.
