CRASH!
"F.B.I.! WE HAVE A WARRANT FOR YOUR ARREST! COME OUT NOW!" Scully yells, stepping over the remnants of the door.
Behind her, armed men in black uniforms come pouring in, kicking in other doors and going up the stairs. Three others follow Scully, and she signals them to kick down the door in front of her. There's a set of steps leading into a dark basement, the only visible thing being a small square of light coming in from the basement window. She holds up a hand, signaling that they stay there.
If there is one thing that she has learned over the years, it's that the basement is a one-man mission.
She carefully makes her way down the stairs, pointing her gun all around her. When she hits the floor, she turns in a circle, her eyes searching the darkness for anything and anyone. She takes a few steps to the right, straining her ears. Upstairs, one of the men calls down, "We got her!"
Scully relaxes and heaves out a sigh, then holsters her gun. But she doesn't have what she wants. The woman isn't who she came here for.
She carefully walks forward in the darkness, straining both her eyes and ears for any sight or sound of Mulder.
"Mulder?" she says. "Mulder, are you down here?"
She reaches into her coat pocket and pulls out a flashlight, turning it on and shining it around. The little circle shines on an old couch, a chair, ropes hanging from the back of the chair, a pile of old blankets and rags, and-
"Mulder!" she gasps, running over.
She kneels beside her partner, who doesn't respond to her voice. Instead, he sits with his knees hugged to his chest, eyes closed tightly, muttering something around the lines of, "Go away."
"Mulder, it's me, Scully," she says. "What did she do to you?"
He inhales noisily, and Scully is suddenly aware that he's crying. "Go away," he sobs quietly. "You're not real. Go away."
Scully stands up and rushes to the bottom of the stairs. "I need medical help down here!" she yells.
Then she returns to Mulder, who still sits with his eyes tightly shut. "Mulder, I've got help coming. You're going to be okay," she assures him.
Finally, Mulder opens his eyes and looks at her. Scully wraps her arms around him, and he begins to cry again, curling up even tighter. She finally lets go of him when more people come running down the stairs with help. But she highly doubts that they're going to be able to give him the help he needs.
He needed help nine days ago.
