"You finished that in 3 days?!" The librarian asks with wide eyes, staring at the computer screen. She holds my library card in her hand as I study the freshly cut gray hair resting above her frail shoulders.
One of Us is Lying
Checked out 1.2.21
Returned 1.5.21
it read once she was done.
"Yeah. It's 2021 now and I'm already off to a great start. Oh, and good book by the way," I say before gently placing another book on the circulation desk between us.
"You've been spending a lot of time here, even during the holidays. You don't have a family to spend 'em with?" She jokingly asks as she picks the book up. She raises her eyebrows to ask if I was checking it in or out.
"Out," I say. She scans the book and smoothly slides it back to me with my library card sitting on top. "And SoRrY, I just y'know, murderedmyfamilydumped'eminalakeandran," I respond with a sarcastic smile, stuffing the book and library card into my bag.
"It's been two years since you've seen them. I'm sure they'd love to see you," she replies. I let out a sigh and turn around, beginning to walk out at that statement.
"Not my family Miss Walsh," I remark as I reach the library doors.
"Have a good day," I hear her say lazily before I exit the library.
The unusual blankets of quiet wrap around me as I present myself in the usually busy hallway. But there's no one. Barely anyone. A few whispers rise here and there as I walk down the hall, but nothing uncomfortable. I smile at that as I walk into the elevator. Finally done with school for today. Next stop: the coffee shop. And then I can-
"Wait! Hold the doors!" A woman calls out, hurrying towards me as the doors begin to close. I push the door open button and the doors retract. I watch her scurry into the elevator as the doors take their final close. She's got brown eyes, a glowing sienna skin tone, long brown hair, and casual wear.
"Thank you," she says.
I avert my eyes from her clothing to meet hers. "No problem. Floor?"
"First," she answers, giving me a thankful smile.
"Looks like we're going to the same place," I joke and push the first-floor button. She chuckles at the comment.
"I guess so," she agrees. "I'm Genesis. Amity." She softly smiles and places her hand out for me to shake.
"Arius. Neil," I say, reciprocating the smile and shaking her perfect, manicured hand. After about four seconds, we let go of each other's hands and a comfortable silence settles in.
"What are your majors?" She questions, breaking the quiet atmosphere.
"Business and Finance. You?"
"Theatre Arts and Interior Design."
"Cool, cool," I say while nodding my head a few times. "Is that what you're in a hurry for?"
"Oh. No actually. My RA and I planned to talk to the people in charge of student housing to switch my dorm, but I'm running late," she states, letting a sigh out at the end.
DING! The elevator sounds before it opens its doors.
"Oh. Well, it was nice meeting you Arius, see you 'round!" Genesis says, waving as she scurries out of the elevator.
She's nice, I think while walking out. A student too. I make my way through the white office lobby and wave at the receptionist before exiting out into the chilly parking lot.

A/N (Author's Note): Hi, so this is the first chapter of Just Choose, the first book I am publishing on Wattpad, as well as the first book I am writing after getting back into storytelling/writing. This is an original story that I made after learning about outlines, so I hope I can make it as enjoyable for you as it is for me writing it. Also, I am a BIG procrastinator, so if the story seems like the writing style has changed a bit, just know that it's probably because I haven't written in a while. Okey, love you, and thank you for reading :)<3
