your chest hurts, you don't know when you started crying, but you could see drops on your phone screen. were you even breathing? everything just felt like too much, your heart was pumping way faster than you could handle. was shoto going to die? your eyes scanned the tv screen that you disregarded earlier, there was so much fire. so many people fighting, so many monsters. was shoto in that fire? was he going to make it out if he was? your lungs were desperately trying to suck in air as you let out strangled sobs. you weren't going to see his face again? you never got to tell him those three stupid words you thought you'd never say, the three words shoto had just said. perhaps some of his last words he'd ever say to you.

call after call, message after message. he doesn't pick up, he doesn't answer, making you cry harder. your legs grew weak as you collapse onto the ground, your mind racing on what to do. you were shaking, on the verge of a total breakdown, pulling at your hair in panic and frustration.

you were pulled into an embrace, "himi-chan, don't cry. it's only a little blood." the man mumbles, comforting me as more tears stream down my face. "please don't cry himi-chan."

"but w-what if-" you snivel like a child, the man smiles, wiping away your tears with his weathered fingers.

"shh, my little himi-chan, it's going to be okay." he holds you tighter, patting your head "i'll protect you."

"i d-didn't say it back." you turn your face into his chest, hiding your tears in his shirt. "i didn't even say it back-"

"hush, himi-chan, i'll make you cookies when we get back." he whispers with a reassuring smiles. "better?"

"i'm not himi-chan, you delirious old man." you remind him softly, he just smiles. "i'm going to call shoto again."

"okay, himi-chan." he chirps, you give a light laugh as you wipe your nose with your sleeve.

"they should really up your meds, sir." you mumble with a ghost of a smile, you dial shoto's number again. the ringing was almost deafening, you were praying that you would hear shoto's dumb little voice say something stupid like-

"hi, i am todoroki shoto. the u.a. student." your heart skips with joy when you heard his voice, but the next words made your stomach drop. "as you can hear, i am not at my phone. i am, most likely, busy with training to become a hero. call me or text me at a later time period if your business with me is urgent. thank you for your cooperation if you are my father, please do not call back.'

your eyes well up with salty tears again, your mentor patting your back merrily saying 'don't mind, himi-chan.' you slump back emotionally exhausted as you stare at nothing while you cry.

"god, i fucking hate voicemails..."
