biting back the urge to groan, elizabeth spun around. "why hello, severus. how brilliant it is to see you again."
"likewise," responded severus, just as sarcastic as elizabeth had been.
a little like elizabeth and the marauder's relationship, hers and severus' was... complicated. they didn't really like each other, but they put up with one another to please lily, and if severus was being bullied, then elizabeth would stand up for him. as a sort of repayment for this, severus taught elizabeth potions, which is now her best subject.
untangling herself from her stunning girlfriend, elizabeth leaned off the seat to throw her trunk against the wall and close the door. lily shuffled over against the window, and elizabeth leaned against her, calling merigold (who had been hiding behind a rather disgruntled severus after being thrown from his owner's shoulder) onto her lap.
after shifting around a bit to settle herself, much to lily's bemusement, she looked between the pair and grinned.
"so, how was your holidays?"

𝙴𝙻𝙸𝚉𝙰𝙱𝙴𝚃𝙷 𝚆𝙰𝚂 𝚃𝙸𝙶𝙷𝚃𝙴𝙽𝙸𝙽𝙶 her red and gold tie when the first glimpse of hogwarts appeared though the trees. the light reflected off the lake, viewable for less than a second before disappearing behind the vegetation again.
she smiled softly, because, despite the memories it held - or, perhaps, because of them - hogwarts was her favourite place in the entire world. as much as she loved the jackson family, nothing could compare to the giant, bricked walls of the castle. it was where she belonged.
she remembered when she'd first arrived; the tiny little girl that rode across the giant lake with her long-lost brother and new friends was so different from her current self that it was almost hard to believe they were the same person. she'd been sorted into Gryffindor immediately, of course, and promptly begun a food-fight with sirius--
lily's laugh drew her back to the present, and she looked between her radiant girlfriend and the grinning boy seated in the other side of the carriage, frowning a little and tugging the redhead closer to her side.
somewhat bemused, lily smiled up at her and snuggled into her side as the castle finally came fully into view.
a few more moments, and they were climbing out of the carriage and joining the flow of people as the older years all migrated towards the great hall for the sorting and the feast. elizabeth jumped down first, her cloak billowing out around her pant-clad legs, then turned to help lily down. the redhead struck a graceful pose and bent her wrist at an awkward angle, sniffing the air almost stuffily.
"why thank you, good sir," she said in a mock-posh voice.
"t'was my pleasure, madam," elizabeth replied, manipulating her voice into that of a rich victorian man.
the coupled giggled at one another as severus made his way around to them from the other side of the carriage. the torchlight from the castle bathed them all in a golden light, and the stars twinkled quietly in the sea of black above them. laughter rang through the air from all different directions, and, with the prospect of a brilliant new year on the horizon, elizabeth couldn't even find it in herself to be jealous when lily took severus' arm as well as her own and began marching them up to the castle. the trio laughed together.
quiet yelling broke the moment, and they stopped again to look back. by the edge of the crowd, near the tree line, was the group of boys elizabeth had such mixed feelings for. they were standing around a young slytherin - probably only a second year - and james was holding a book high over his head, waving it enticingly as sirius and peter taunted the small boy. remus was, of course, standing off to one side, watching it all happen, as he always did.
heat prickled under elizabeth's skin, and she unwrapped her arm from lily's, stalking over to the group. sirius turned as she approached, something unrecognisable flashing across his face, but the ravenette barging straight past him, knocking her shoulder roughly against his.
she planted herself firmly in between the slytherin boy and james, crossing her arms tightly across her chest. "give in back, potter," she growled. "or else."
the brunette hesitated, then smirked maliciously. "or else what, jackson?" he pouted dramatically. "you going to throw a love potion at me?" he turned to the others, and they laughed.
elizabeth's eyes flashed. she whipped her wand out of her pocket and pointed it calmly at the taller boy's neck.
"give. it. back."
the bespectacled boy swallowed, and, after giving her a dirty look, he slowly handed her the book. elizabeth flicked her wand threateningly, and they began to retreat towards the school. as remus passed her, she said scathingly, "i thought you were better than that, lupin," and the boy winced, hurrying after his friends.
turning, elizabeth offered the small slytherin a tight smile and handed his book back. "sorry about that," she apologised, reaching out to brush the tears off his cheeks. "not all gryffindors are bad; i promise."
he nodded shakily and inched sideways away from her. the ravenette sighed as he sprinted away, stumbling up the hill towards another couple of boys, who raced after him into the hall.
lily walked over slowly, looping her arm back through elizabeth's. she pulled her girlfriend back up the hill, where severus was waiting, and they proceeded to the great hall in silence.
elizabeth's fist was still shaking somewhat as she remembered what they used to do to the slytherins. exclusively slytherins. because they were slytherins.
she remembered exactly why she left the marauders now. and she didn't regret it any more. not one bit.
