The alarm beside my bed blared in my ears, practically vibrating my brain with its shrill tones. I groaned and rolled over in bed, lifting an arm out from the warmth of my blankets to lazily slap at the offending machine until my fingers blindly found the off button. Mornings were normally easy for me, however, today was different. It was the first day of my third year of high school. I had been dreading this day for a while, as many had. It was the final year of high school. Only one more year to spend with my friends, one more year before I had to withdraw myself to learn from my father all about the business he ran.
I forced myself to sit up in bed and rub my eyes to try and wake up a bit more. Finally getting rid of the last dregs of sleep from my eyes, I glanced over at the alarm clock to check the time. 6AM. Just enough time to get some breakfast and walk to school. Getting up from the bed, I padded across the cool hardwood floor to my closet door. I opened it and grabbed my uniform from the rack inside and a fresh pair of boxers from the shelf to the side. The mirror on the inside of the door taunted me with my reflection. My messy copper hair badly needed brushing and the spot of dried up drool on the side of my mouth was very obvious and needed to be cleaned up. Guess I should clean up first.
With a soft sigh, I brought my uniform to the attached bathroom and hung it up on the shower curtain bar before moving to the sink to wash my face properly. Once I dried my face, I quickly brushed my teeth and changed into the clean boxers, putting my uniform on after that.
After getting ready, I hurried down stairs to the kitchen to grab a quick bite to eat, one of my mother's fresh made pastries from a bowl on the island. She was nowhere to be found and neither was my father, both of them likely at work already. It didn't take me long to finish my breakfast and I put my shoes on by the door, hauling my sports bag up onto my shoulder before leaving the house to begin my walk to school. When I reached the gate, I deflated a little bit upon seeing all the couples together walking into the building. Most of those relationships wouldn't last very long, and I found myself glancing down at the hand holding the strap of my sports bag.
Yes, I could see the red string of fate. However, I wasn't sure who mine led to and seeing all those sappy high-school sweethearts day in and day out always made me wonder if perhaps I should try harder to find who was at the other end of that string.
The first warning bell tolled from the school building and I snapped my attention back to getting to my shoe locker and heading to class, shaking the wandering thoughts from my mind for the time being. It would do me no good to dwell on something as silly as a soulmate on the first day of my third and final year of high school...
