A Night To Remember

T'was the night of my father's departure. Our close friends, as well as family, dance around the fire. Father sits on his log, enjoying his party. Mother sits on the ground beside him, smiling with tearful eyes.

He sips his meeg whilst he taps his foot to the beat being played on the broken down fiddle. His friends walk around him, patting him on the shoulder, as if in aurevoirs.

I swing around, arm to arm. To Johanne, then to Rowan. Hearty laughs are floating in the air. Smiles are shining over the fire. On the street next to us, people pass in melancholy. Our happiness doesn't affect them the way it should.

"The riches I shall bring back will certainly guide us out of severe poverty. I will succeed for you my dear, as well as for Emilie and Johanne. Oh, Elizabeth. You look as beautiful as the day I courted you. I shall be back in three moons." Father kisses my mothers hand, waves us off and enters the mighty ship. Johanne has tears flowing down her cheek. Mother waves her off white handkerchief. We cry together in sadness, as well as hopelessness. Father brings us happiness as well as income. To be candor, I do not think that we are prepared to do the work to keep us alive.
