January 2020

Sophie quickly glanced at the time on her dashboard, before she pushed her foot down on the throttle, letting her car gain speed as she got comfortable on the empty German Autobahn that would lead her away from the Swiss city Zurich where Mick lived in a small apartment whenever he wanted to escape the attention he got when he was home at his family's house near Lake Geneva. Admittedly, that was pretty often. Sophie didn't like the media and the light it showed on her past, but Mick — he absolutely hated it.

Even though the media loved him, never seemed to say anything bad about him and yet the idea of all the people already knowing about Mick's past and so many details in his life made him anxious. Not that Sophie couldn't understand that. It was why Mick and her had become friends in the first place.

Quickly, Sophie turned down the radio when she heard a little noise from the trunk. For a few seconds it was quiet and then, the same sound came again, this time louder. Ellie, Sophie's dog was already completely asleep, softly snoring. For some reason Ellie had always loved getting driven around, similar to a newborn that was comforted by the even movement of the car. It made travelling a lot easier as Ellie was always very relaxed on long car rides like this one. The only exception was when Sophie's friend Farah was driving. After being in a car with her, Ellie always had to barf — and Sophie couldn't even scold Ellie for that because Farah's driving style was in fact puke-worthy.

Since Ellie was fine, Sophie decided to press a little button on her steering wheel which resulted in a little beep from her Alfa Romeo.

"Call Lando Norris", Sophie told her car to which it responded with another beep before dialing her best friend's number. The phone rang five times and Sophie was already sure that Lando wouldn't pick up when the line cracked. She was greeted by a loud groan as the phone connected.

"Are you dying?", Lando asked and his voice sounded husky, showing Sophie that she had woken him up — which was exactly what she had anticipated.

"Get up idiot", she grinned and sped up after the speed limit on the Autobahn was lifted. Once she reached 100 kph she shifted into 6th gear before continuing to push until she reached a comfortable 170 kph.

"It's already seven. Don't you have media stuff to do as well?", she asked and Lando groaned again before she heard rustling noises on the other side of the line. Knowing him, he was probably tumbling out of bed at this point so Sophie waited patiently for him to reply.

"Great. Which means it's six over here in England. I have to leave at half nine. What the fuck am I supposed to do for two and a half more hours, Soph?"

"Stop complaining and check the time before you cuss me out. It's seven in England, I can remember the time difference, idiot. It's eight over here in Germany. I've already had two coffees."

"You don't even like coffee", Lando murmered.

"Wait", he sounded more awake now. "Are you already back in Germany? Weren't you supposed to sleep in the hotel in Milan this night?"

"Yup", Sophie said, making a plopping sound after the p. "But I already checked out at five this morning and picked up Ellie from Mick's place like an hour ago. I've just crossed the border so I thought I should call you."

Lando only grumbled as an answer but Sophie knew him well enough to know he was probably already on his way to the kitchen.

It was how they spend most their mornings off-season - FaceTiming or calling each other in the mornings, because usually neither of them had any appointments that early in the day. With Sophie being an early riser, she had already worked out and gone on a stroll with her dog Ellie before Lando woke from his "very important beauty sleep" and began to make breakfast. Even though making breakfast in Landos language meant taking whatever Jon had left for him out of the fridge.
