It's dark. Too cold for comfort, and a little hard to breathe. I shift slightly in my bed as I make an attempt to reach for the blanket under me except, it wasnt there. My eyes shoot open and I claw at my surroundings, searching for something, anything to keep me warm. I wrap my arms around myself and rub at my bicep but its not helping. I groan in frustration and reluctantly lift my upperbody. I sit up and place my hands beside me to support my balance as I stand up sluggishly and begin to walk toward what I think is the light switch.
That is until I hear a faint voice calling out, nearly a whisper. I close my eyes and concentrate on the mysterious voice to try and pinpoint where it's coming from. The voice grows louder but I dont know which way it's calling from.
I open my eyes to see I'm in a room. I know this room, but from where? The room had beige walls with posters of someone who looked exactly like... spider man? There was a bed made for a child tucked in the corner of the room, and a tall dresser on the complete opposite side of the room. It lined up against the wall and on top of it was a bunch of spider man figurines. Whoever's room this was, I feel bad for their parent. The voice now becomes clear, but I still cant hear the words the spill out the mouth of seemingly nobody.
I blink again and flinch at the boy who suddenly appeared in front of me out of thin air. This mystery boy couldnt be any older than seven. He had messy dark brown hair that looked extremely soft to the touch. His face was round, head shaped like an egg and he looked squishy. The boy also has eyes that were at least 3 shades lighter than the color of his hair and held not much innocence and hope. He suddenly flashed a wide smile, almost blinding me. He had on a spider man t-shirt and a pair of cargo shorts. His arms looked fragil and his legs looked as if he couldn't hold his own weight.
Where did he come from?
Who is he?
Am I seeing things?
I blink and see the boy reaching out a hand toward me. I reach for it and stop halfway. My surroundings changed. I look around and see I'm in a shallow lake surrounded by a forest of oak trees drowning in green leaves as some fall slowly as the faint spring breeze cradles it and gently let's it fall gracefully to the ground below. I look up and see an abnormally large log wrapped in...mold? Moss, maybe? It looked old and hollow and was held up with the support of two humungous boulders.
Weird. I remember this place too.
I look back at what was in front of me and flinched internally when I see the boy still reaching his hand out for me to grab. I take his hand and notice that my hand looks... smaller. The boy helps me up happily, the bright smile never leaving his face.
I blinked again and saw the same boy but older. He looked about 14 now. His eyes looked emotionless and psychotic, about 6 shades darker than the color I saw a second ago. My eyes scanned the boy. He wore a white button-up shirt tucked into long black dress pants, which looked a size too big for him, a thick leather black belt holding his pants up, and a red silk tie, hanging against a black vest. The boy's hair was now died a blood red and his clothes were dirty. He looked messy. Tired. Sad. He fiddled with the tie a bit, adjusting it until it was comfortable enough for him. Then, the boy looked me dead in the eye. If looks could kill id be dead. His stare was intense, almost as if he was looking straight into my soul. After a few seconds, the boy spoke. His voice was soft but his words held anger.
"How could you do this to me? I trusted you with my life."
Huh?
I blinked and I checked my surroundings once again. We were now in the city, and two police officers were holding on to the red haired boy as he struggled to break free from their grips, making no progress. I heard him yelling at... me? His voice was cracking and he was crying, choking on his tears. I listened to him as he sobbed and yelled at me. "I TRUSTED YOU? HOW COULD YOU? DONT LET THEM SEPARATE US! PLEASE! Please!...please...". I couldn't move, no matter how hard i tried, i was stuck in the position i was in. i tried to talk but my mouth wouldn't open. The boy soon gave up, no longer struggling against the police officers, letting himself be dragged away by them.
I heard a faint "...Coco..." and turned my head almost snapping my neck when I heard it. I rushed to my feet and ran towards him, my feet barely keeping up with how fast I was running, but he only seemed to be moving farther away. I held back a sob as I ran faster, almost tripping over myself. My legs gave out on me and I fell to my knees and sobbed harder than ever.
I heard a faint "Wake up." before I blinked again. My eyes shot open and my lungs tightened making it harder to breathe as I sat up faster than my mind can handle. I desperately gasped for air but it wasnt working. My face started to burn as the hot tears began to stream down to my cheeks and drip from my chin, soaking into my blanket.
I hugged the blanket for dear life and cradled it. After a while I calmed down and my lungs finally went back to its original state and I took a few deep breaths. 'It smells different in here. My blanket smells different.
I sniffed my blanket again. It smells like lavender and a hint of mint leaves. It reminds me of my childhood friend. He always smelled the same no matter what. But sadly, he was deemed missing the year of his 10th birthday. I wonder if he- no. My alarm clock then began practically screaming. 5:30am, it's time to get ready for school. 'Well, here goes nothing.' i thought to myself as i gently rubbed my eyes. I shifted to the right and before I could register what was in front of me, I saw him wave at me shyly and speak.
"Hey Coco, long time no see."
What the fuck.
