Ally rolled her eyes. "How did I know you were going to suggest that?"

"Because it's me," he said, smirking again, "So... what do you say?"

A knot formed in Ally's stomach. "Sure. Yeah, okay."

"I know you've been hesitant about... everything, but it's like I said, after today I'm not gonna leave your side ever again. We made a promise about that earlier, I don't know if you remember..." Ally grinned.

"No, I do. I just thought we could focus on soaking up our first moments as a married couple, rather than just..."

"I know," Austin interrupted. "But we both have been looking forward to this. I know I have. Haven't you?"

Ally blushed a little. "I guess."

"That's what I thought," Austin said in a lower voice, almost like a whisper. Ally just rolled her eyes and leaned back onto his shoulder.

When the newlyweds arrived back at Austin's place, they were surprised, shocked, and a little amused to see a mattress propped up against the wall near their door. Ally let out a laugh.

"Gee... I wonder who that's from?" Austin shook his head, playing along.

"No idea." He took a step closer and read the note that was attached to it. "Austin and Ally: Congratulations— please accept this as a sort of late wedding gift. We felt that it needed no further explanation. Every married couple should start their lives together with a great mattress! ;) -Mike and Mimi." Ally giggled. She couldn't help it. Of course their first gift from their in-laws would be a mattress. It just made sense.

"Well..." Austin said awkwardly, fumbling for his keys, "Should we... go inside, test this baby out?" Ally grinned.

"It only seems appropriate. I mean, it'd be a shame to let your parents' gift go to waste." They both grabbed one side of the mattress and dragged it inside, getting it situated on the bed frame and fitted with sheets. They both lay down, getting underneath the covers and turning to face each other.

"So..." Austin said, "How do you like the mattress? Comfy, isn't it?" Ally nodded, suddenly noticing that her palms were clammy.

"Yeah. I suppose." She looked down at her pillow, seemingly distracted. Austin frowned.

"Hey... everything alright?" Ally nodded, still not meeting his gaze.

"Yeah, I'm good. I'm just a little nervous, that's all." Austin reached over, tilted her chin up to face him.

"There's no reason to be nervous. It's just me."

"Yes, but... there's so much pressure. It's our wedding night, for crying out loud. It's such a special occasion, and the expectation is that everyone ... you know..." Austin let out a chuckle. "Even your parents were trying to give us the hint. Which is weird, considering... they're your parents."

"Ally, if you're too nervous, we don't have to—"

"No, I promise I do. It's just... uncharted territory, you know?" Austin nodded.

"Yeah, I know. This is all new for me, too, Ally. I'm nervous, too." He paused. "But like I said, there's nothing to be worried about. Okay?" She nodded. Austin leaned over and placed a gentle kiss on her lips, and she leaned in, kissing him back.

fifteen minutes later

10:00 p.m.

The newlyweds both lay on their backs under the covers, staring up at the ceiling. Austin quickly broke out into a smile and stared at his wife.
