It was past midnight in Dema. Alex, who had been there her whole life, was trying to escape. She had tried about 3 times already, but failed each time. Keons, the bishop that guarded her district, had found her each time, for she had tried mid-day, only recently learning that night is her best chance.

She started packing her bags with the stuff she would need like food, water, clothes, a pocket knife and blankets. She had gotten a note, telling her where to meet and when, and it was almost time. She hurried to her parents room, to say goodbye for the last time. They were asleep, but at least she wouldn't feel as guilty.

She hurried back to her room, got her bag, and jumped out the window, careful to not make a sound, not wanting to get caught again. She hurried to a back alley, careful of the guarded walking around.

When she got to the alley, she pulled out her pocket knife just in case she needed it, but she hoped she wouldn't.

Alex wasn't one to be scared, but today was different. She knew if she got caught again, she would get punished, possibly by death. Because of this knowledge, she put off trying for a few months.

Then she heard footsteps. She quickly ran to a dumpster, hoping she wouldn't get caught.
