The Train Scene

INT. AMHERTS STATION - DAY

In a crowded train station, Anne approaches a young man with hopes of earning some money.

ANNE 

Excuse me, sir. May I interest you in a rousing tale of heroic deeds and acts of bravery? 

The man is uninterested and walks away without listening to a word she's saying.

ANNE 

 It'll pass the time...

Alone and unmotivated, she takes a moment to recollect herself before approaching two young women who sit on one of the benches.

ANNE 

 Pardon me. May I transport you for a few minutes with a romantical recitation replete with the tragedy of a love unrequited?

The two women are enthralled with her and hand her a coin. Anne smiles excitedly and starts her passionate recitation.

ANNE 

 If thou must love me, let it be for nought, except for love's sake only. Do not say, 'I love her for her smile - her look - her way of speaking gently,' - for a trick of thought that falls in well with mine, and certes brought...

MATTHEW 

 Anne!

Anne trails off and nervously searches for whoever called her name; not seeing anyone, she continues her recitation, her voice quavery and unstable.

ANNE 

 ...a sense of pleasant ease on such a day. For these things in themselves may be changed, or change for thee, - and love, so wrought may be un-wrought–

From the other side of the room, Matthew makes his way through the crowd. Once he reaches her side, he relaxes and smiles.

MATTHEW Anne, thank goodness I found you.

ANNE 

So Marilla must've found the brooch, then, because I am not a thief. Now, if you'll please excuse me, I'm in the middle of earning some wages. I've got a train to catch.

The two women stare uncomfortably. Anne turns back towards them and carries on, trying to ignore Matthew and drown him out by speaking loudly.

ANNE 

 They love dear wiping my cheeks dry... A creature might forget to weep–

MATTHEW 

Please, Anne. It was a terrible misunderstanding...
