Chapter Sixty-Four

After their Theory of Charms exam, the fifth years had lunch, then trooped into the small chamber beside the Great Hall where they will wait until their names are called for the practical exam. Having her the first letter of her family name being 'B', Carina was one of the students who got called first. She left for the chamber with Lavender Brown, Susan Bones, Terry Boot, Mandy Brockiehurst, and Millicent Bulstrode. Professor Flitwick had instructed Carina to proceed to a door where Professor Babbling was waiting for her, upon entering the room, Carina Professor Tofty, before her was a table with a candle holder. Professor Tofty had Carina sit down at the present chair then gave her the practical exam.

"Ah, Black. It's simple," Professor Tofty said. "I want you to summon this candle holder. I shall place it at a far place and you shall summon it when I saw so."

Carina merely nodded. Professor Tofty placed the candle-holder at the farthest place in the room and then sat back down on her chair.

"Shall we begin?" Professor Tofty said.

"Yes, Professor," Carina nodded. She got out her wand and pointed at the candle-holder. "Accio Candle-holder."

In a snapping motion, the candle-holder flew from the floor and into Carina's hand. After that, Professor Tofty had her use a charm to make the egg holder do cartwheels – a success – and then had the wineglass levitate – a piece of cake. Then when it was time to change the color of the rat, Carina had accidentally made the rat color pink than the intended color of orange. Carina glared at the pink rat – remembering Umbridge (by its color) and Pettigrew (because of the rat).

Their exams went on the following days: Wednesday: Herbology; Thursday: Defense Against the Dark Arts, which Carina was sure she passed, especially when she was able to perform all the counterjinxes and defensive spells right in front of Umbridge (who held her angered face the whole time), and by the end of her practical, Carina couldn't help but send the woman a smirk. Friday, Carina had Ancient Runes with Hermione, whilst Harry and Ron had a day off.

After her Ancient Runes exam, Carina felt like her brain was about to explode with its throbbing.

"I mistranslated 'ehwaz'" Hermione said, furiously. "It means 'partnership' not 'defense' – I mixed it with 'eihwaz'"

"No, Hermione... please stop," Carina said. "I don't want to talk about it right now."

Hermione simply sighed.

At the corner of her eye, Carina saw Theodore walking out of the classroom, alone. She left Hermione's side and went to Theodore's ("Carina, where'd you go?" Hermione called out). Carina kept up with Theodore's pace and even held on to his robes to stop him from running.

"How was the exam?" Carina asked.

"Easy," Theodore said.

Carian sighed in relief to hear something come out of Theodore's mouth other than "yes" and "no". She's been trying for weeks now to get him to talk to her and Roman, but he kept on avoiding them.

"Theodore, please –"

"Leave me alone, Carina," Theodore sighed.

Carian blocked his way, "I won't because no matter how much you tell me to, I could see it in your eyes that you don't want to be alone." Theodore looked down at his feet, avoiding her gaze. "Can't you see that Roman and I – that I care about you? Please, just talk to us."

"There's nothing to talk about."

"There is! We're friends! We always talked, even if it's the stupidest subject there is! Why won't you talk to us?"
