I leaned on the other bookshelf and looked at him. "Are you kidding? It's obviously the person on the other side." I said.
"Right, i'll go ch-"
"I'm sorry! I didn't know." A stranger apologized.
"That's alrig-" As soon as I looked up it was him again.
"Manners." Matte said, in a low hiss sound.
"Little." Jonathan said with the same tone.
"You guys know each other?" I asked, trying to stand up straight.
"Unfortunately, yes. Quarterback, football captain. But he gave it all up, just for one stupid girl." He explained, as if it just happened yesterday.
"What you did was wrong, Matte, that's not how girls are treated." He defended.
"That's what you always say, Jonathan! To every single bitch you meet, that's what you tell them! But you can only choose one Jonathan, not all of them belongs to you!" Matte screamed, face turning red from his anger.
"She was different Matte, I had my eyes on her for the longest of time, and you humiliated her in front of so many people!" Now Jonathan was screaming.
"Wait guys, fill me in! I don't know what's happening." I pleaded. They both looked at me and calmed down. Jonathan was the first to speak.
"It was 3 years ago, before we entered high school. We had a party, we invited-" he hesitated, "this girl, hoping that I would be able to confess to her. Then Matte Little here almost got her killed!" He hissed.
"Hey, it was her fault man. She came to the party." He said, as if that's gonna make it any better.
"Ok time out, Matte, give us a second, Jonathan, let's talk."
"What?! You'll choose this punk over me?! I thought we had something special teddy bear." He said then he was starting to pout.
"Matte, sorry to burst your bubble but, there was never an us in the first place. Really sorry to break it to you." I said.
"Fine then, just don't come running back to me when he breaks your heart." He said coldly then walked out.
I sighed loudly then dropped to the ground with a thud.
"Are you Ok??" Jonathan asked, sitting beside me.
"Yeah i'm fine, i'm just emotionaly exhausted."
"Ok, well, uhm, what did you want to talk about??" He asked.
"3 years ago, you said something about a girl?" I guessed.
"Yeah, she was really nerdy and geeky, everytime I talk to her I feel like we've known each other for the longest time. She was really easy to talk to. You know??"
Yes, because I was that girl.
"Do you know where she is now?" I asked innocently.
"No, after I moved to England I never really got the chance to talk to her again. I was hoping that she was still studying here." He explained.
I closed my eyes and felt my head throb. I need to find a way to be not so suspicious.
"Well, why don't you like, hunt her down?" I suggested.
Such a great idea Marcy, real genius...
"And how?" He asked.
"I don't know, put up flyers I guess? What's her name?" I asked pretending not to know.
"Marceline Alfhiem."
Yeap, that's me.
Three years ago when Jonathan moved, I coincidentally had to move to California because of my parents job, that was the time I got my braces off and everything, that's when I started to change, or in other words... Puberty I guess... Then a year and a half later my parents got into a big divorce and I was forced to stay with my mom, I had to change my last name to 'Mass' and we moved back here to Chicago. Turns out I went a little over board with the 'change' and got myself into the 'popular kids' well... I was number one, Alli was 3rd.
I cleared my throught, "Well, uhm, you can put her name up on the flyers and stuff." I suggested.
"Maybe..." he paused, "Hey! Why don't you help me with the flyers??" He asked excitedly.
"Pardon?" I asked, a bit hazy.
"You know, like, make an announcement to your friends and ask them about her." He explained.
"I don't exactly have that many friends... I honestly only talk to one person in this school."
"What? But... You're considered as one of the popular kids, people talk about you in the halls."
"Yes, they talk about me, but they don't talk with me... There's a difference, flyers are going to be fine." I assure him. I got up and scanned for the book that I was looking for.
"Oh yeah, why did you want to know about the girl I meantioned to Matte??"
Because I wanted to know if you still remember and still like me...
But I can never say that.
"It just reminded me of someone." I said. I bent down and grabbed the book from the corner of the shelf.
"Who?"
Me.
