"Do you remember that time we were supposed to meet before one of our most difficult practical finals that I had a hard time to get and we were supposed to practice? Well I did beg you to do it one last time with me." She interrupted. She knew he wouldn't believe her so it's time to tell the story.
Of course he remembered. How could he forget that day?
He was surprised to get a call from her 2 weeks after the kiss fiasco when they haven't been talking to each other ever since that fateful day. Woo Jin still remembered that kiss like it was yesterday. Her lips were warm and soft and she smelled of citrus and vanilla his now new favorite scents. He would never regret kissing her and the fact she was the first girl he ever kissed and wanted to kiss made it more special and unforgettable to him. He regretted the way he went about it though. But being deprived of a male figure in his life and no one had taught him how to woo women he just let his instincts made the decision for him knowing how he had wanted to do that for a while now and that day she just looked extra beautiful to him with her flaws and imperfections. But being afraid that he made a mistake and the rejection that would follow was imminent he made sure he had the upper hand and was now guilt ridden that he acted like a jerk towards her and truly deserving of that slap on his face.
She called him begging him to help her and truly how could he say no? Maybe this was his chance to make things right. He would build up the courage to tell her how he really felt about her. That he did actually meant that kiss he gave her and not just to forget about what happened and "reset" her mind. The day came and he nervously waited for her for almost two hours at the lab and she was a no show. Did she change her mind? He tried reaching her yet she wasn't answering his calls and messages too. He got worried that something wrong had happened and went to search for her at the places he knew she frequented. He even asked her friends and their fellow classmates who were bewildered why he was looking for her for they didn't even knew they were well acquainted. It was raining hard that day too yet he continued looking for her and when he was almost out of wits, about to go crazy where to look for her and soaked from head to toe his phone rang. It was her.
"Yah Cha Eun Jae! Where are you? I've been calling and texting you for hours!" He shouted at the phone angrily. He was so worried that something might've had happened to her.
He could hear her breathing on the other line but she wasn't saying anything.
"Yah Eun Jae are you alright? Do you need me to come to you right now?" He asked alarmed.
"I'm so sorry Seo Woo Jin something really serious came up. I'm sorry that I made you wait." She finally spoke.
It was strange. She sounded dejected and resigned it was unlike her and he told her so.
"Why do you sound like that? What's going on?" He asked again.
"Sound like what? I'm fine. Don't worry Seo Woo Jin it's something I can manage." She said and he could hear her clearing her throat.
Her voice was distant and hollow. Something was really up.
"Did you just stood me up? Are you sure this was not some sort of revenge?" He tried goading her into some sort of a different reaction.
"I'm really sorry Seo Woo Jin that wasn't my intention." She apologized again.
There was no snarky remarks, no tirade, no pleading. Nothing. Just pure monotonous voice. It was troubling him.
"Are sure you're okay Cha Eun Jae?" He asked concern was evident in his voice.
"I'm okay is just that I thought...never mind. I have to go Seo Woo Jin." She started then stopped.
Suddenly he was very curious as to what she
he wanted to say.
"You thought what Cha Eun Jae?" He insisted.
There was a momentary silence again before she spoke.
"It's nothing, I just thought this thing that came up would be something I could resolve immediately..but I guess it's going to take some time." There was something ominous in her voice that Woo Jin didn't like but then they weren't really that close enough for him to keep pestering her about it.
"If you're sure..." He finally albeit reluctantly conceded.
"I'm sure." She answered firmly. "Umm.. I have to go." She told him.
"Okay. See you in class."
"Yes. See you." As he was about to hang up she heard him call his name. " By the way Seo Woo Jin?"
"Yes?"
"Thank you for everything." And she hang up.
That was the last time he had a normal conversation with her. She never asked for his help again. The worst was that she kept her distance. The next time they would interact was when they were being competitive. Something Woo Jin tried to achieve since it the only way he knew he would be able to talk to her and to get himself close to her.
"I don't think I would ever forget that day Cha Eun Jae." He told her wistfully looking at her.
He was surprised to see the sadness in her eyes too.
"I won't forget it too. It was the Valentine's Day I got my heart broken."
