Chapter 5

 so here is chapter 5

I got up to my room and sat on my bed. How could this have happened to her?
I knew I should have stayed. I shouldn't have let her go to her house. This
was all my fault. She was gone now. There was nothing I could do except to
just wait.

I was deep into thought when I heard knocking at the door. I reluctantly
got up and answered.

"Hey, honey. Have you heard what had happened to Candy?" my dad said
tiredly.

I sighed. "Yeah, it's horrible. I wish he had taken me instead of her." I
felt the urge to cry.

Dad came towards me and pulled me close into a hug. I couldn’t hold back
the tears that threatened to leak. There was nothing I could do to help her.
My mind wondered on the thought of the paper I found. I released from my
father's hug and dug into my deep pockets. I pulled out the paper and
showed it to my dad.

“What’s this all about?” he questioned.

“I found this.”

My father looked both panicked and angry. "How could you keep this Liz?
This is information that could be important to the case!"

I flinched from the anger in his voice. I didn’t think they would need it.
In my eyes, it was just a letter telling them what he wanted. They probably
already read it.

"I'm sorry Dad. I really didn't think it would be important." I sobbed into
his shoulder.

"It’s okay. But you could have gotten into a lot of trouble. This is
information that police needs for the case.” My father said sternly.

"But we don’t need the police, Dad. We can solve this on our own.” I looked
at my father pleadingly. I tried to take the paper away from his hands but
he pulled it away, leaving it out of my reach.

He walked to the door, then turned to face me, a serious look on his face.
“You don’t have nothing to do with this case. It is the police’s job. It’s
in their hands now,” he said before exiting the room. I slumped on my bed
and sighed. I needed to get that paper back. Without it, I would helpless.

I took a bath, the stream pushing aside all my troubles. As soon as I was
starting to feel relaxed, my phone began to ring. I groaned and quickly
wrapped a towel around myself, then reluctantly got out the bathroom and
answered the phone.

"Hello?" I said, annoyed.

"Someone’s a little moody today, aren’t they?" the voice on the other end
said.

Confusion filled me. "Who is this?"

I didn’t get a reply, just laughter.

“Look. I really don’t want to talk right now. Why are you calling me?” I
said, getting more annoyed.

"Chill Liz. It’s just me, Zach. You know, your best friend for like, ever,"
he replied with a fake shock to his voice.

I smiled. "Sorry. I didn’t mean to take it out on you. My dad just got me
really upset. So what’s up.”?

"Well, I was wondering if you wanted to hang out sometime...like around
seven tomorrow. I-I...mean if you don’t have any plans and all that," he
stammered. A smile played on my lips at his attempt to try and sound all
cool and casual. Maybe hanging out with a friend was what I needed to get
my mind off of things.

"Sure. I have no plans," I said.

"Really? Are you sure? I mean, you don't have to if you don't want to." He
chuckled nervously.

l laughed. "It’s okay. Really I want to."

"Okay then. Well I gotta go. See you tomorrow, Liz," he said in such a rush
that I could barely understand him.

"Wait!”

Before I could finish my sentence, the line went dead. That was strange. I
brushed off the feeling and put on my All-Star Weekend tank top and my
black striped shorts and flopped into bed. I wondered why Zach called and
asked to hang out with me on such short notice. I erased the thought from
my mind and drifted off to sleep.
