Chapter 26 - Carnival Time
_______________________________

"I can pay!" Melanie insisted and I sighed.

"Fine." I sulked. I didn't like it when people paid for me because it made me feel like I owed them something. I know I don't owe my friend anything but still.

Melanie paid the entrance fee and we both walked in. The carnival looked really pretty, all the neon lights were shining, all the stalls had friendly-looking people and the rollercoasters looked thrilling and terrifyingly fun.

I guess you would have to have a lot of guts to actually ride one of them. I was known for being quite reckless with my life, I wasn't afraid of anything but put me in a car or near a tiger - despite them being one of my favorite wild animal - then I would definitely be scared for my life. One of the reasons why I couldn't drive was because of my intense fear of car accidents.

Whenever Melanie or my uncle tried to teach me I would always bring the car to a halt in the first few moments of the lesson. When I was behind the wheel for some odd reason, I would get a continuous reminder of that dreadful night when my parents had died making me an orphan in this world. The flashbacks never stopped behind the wheel and I didn't want to risk it and put other people in danger on the road because the memories could hit me any second.

Over the years I learned how to be comfortable riding in the passenger seat. I hated high speeds and races and made sure to avoid them. I was fine when I didn't feel like the driver was being reckless.

I always wished that I was allowed to experience things that a normal child does. The part where your father scares your boyfriend and threatens them with a gun, the part where you tell your mother to tell you about her first love, and the way she met your dad and other things other children had. I didn't know how they met.

My gran was amazing at raising me and Mel's mom made for a great second mother, but neither of them could actually substitute that loving and warm emotion that my own mother brought me.

"Let's go wait in line for the Ferris Wheel!" Mel said and I followed her.

I thought the line would be long but there was no line.

The man that operated it looked at me, "Are you Ashley Hayes?" He asked me.

I nodded, "Yes. Why?"

"No particular reason. You can get into the thirteenth candy floss cart." He told me.

I shrugged at his weirdness and decided that it would be best to just shrug off the creepy fact he knew my name. I walked to the purple candy floss that had the number thirteen printed on it. I opened the door and slid in, I saw something move and I let out a piercing shriek.

"Ashley calm down!" A man's voice said.

"Brandon?" I asked hesitantly.

"In the flesh love," He grinned.

"What are you doing here?" I asked him feeling annoyed.

"Riding the ride. Is it against the law to get on the Ferris wheel?" He asked me.

"I was expecting Mel to be my partner," I said.

"Alright. Pull us up, Larry!" Brandon called.

The gate to exit the candy floss closed and soon our little cage was ascending towards the sky, giving us a clear view of the whole park. It looked even more beautiful from the height, the lights were pretty and the city was even visible. You could see one of the many highways.

"Was this planned?" I asked him.

"What do you mean?" He said innocently.

"You and Melanie planned this!" I insisted.

"Okay fine, maybe we did." He relented and I smirked.

"I knew it!"

"Yeah. Well done I guess. I have been wanting to say something to you but first look down at the fairgrounds," He told me.

I leaned in our little cotton candy carriage and looked downwards. The people down below were holding a massive sign which read: 'Be my girlfriend Ashy?'

I sighed and turned to Brandon who was holding a blue rose.

"Will you?" He asked me.

"No," I said.

"What?" He gasped, "Did I hear you correctly?"

"You did indeed hear me correctly. I can't be your girlfriend Brandon. You need to win me over!" I hissed.

"I can't live without you!" He said, "I'm losing my mind."

"If you love something truly, you'll fight for it. My grandma taught me that." I told him.

He sighed, "Fine. I'm picking you up at seven tomorrow from your apartment."

"No," I said.

"What do you mean no, Ashley? I ask you to be my girlfriend, you say no. I want to take you on a date so that we can reconnect or whatever but you say no! What more can I do?" He huffed.

"Maybe, try asking me on a date, and don't command me to go on one with you. I'm not one of your damn employees that you can boss around. News flash Brandon! You can't control me or my life." I said.

"But-" He began.

"Butts are for ashtrays. How do you even know where I live?" I demanded.

"Paulo may have done a background check on you," He said hesitantly.

"Oh, I see," I said.

"Yes. Ashley, will you go on a date with me tomorrow?" He asked gently.

I shook my head, "I can't I'm really busy." I answered.

"I won't stop asking until you agree on one with me."

"Okay," I shrugged.

The candy floss descended from the air and when the door opened I immediately ran out of it and straight into a wall.

"Ouch!" I hissed as I hit my nose.

"Are you alright?" A man said placing his arms around me to steady me.

I nodded, "I'm sorry for running into you!"

"It's no prob-" He began.

"Get your filthy hands off her!" Brandon yelled as he punched the guy in the jaw.

"I was just helping her stand on her two feet again. Didn't mean to cause any harm," The man groaned from the floor as he clutched his jaw.

"You touched what is mine! I'll sue you for harassment!" Brandon growled.

"Sir!" The man gasped, "I have a family waiting for me back home. They rely on me. I'm the breadwinner!" He gasped.

"You shouldn't have touched what belongs to me!" Brandon roared.

"I don't belong to you Brandon! Stop it!" I yelled.

"Don't start with me, Ashley!" He growled.

"I'm not your object or possession. I belong to no one! No one!" I yelled, "Why can't you stop causing havoc in my life? I hate you!" I yelled as tears flew down my face.

Brandon's face relaxed because of tears before it turned stormy at my words.

"What did you say?" He said his tone deep.

"I. Hate. You." I said emphasizing each word, "Now stay away from me! Because of you, I lost my best friend and my fianceè! Now just leave me alone! You've caused a lot of problems in my life already!" I yelled and ran off.

Even though they both betrayed me, they were an important part of my life, and losing them hurt. I just wish the people I cared about would stop finding ways to hurt me.
