Chapter 13: Another Reunion

"Wait . . . so your plan is to start a war with the Patriots using Texas?" I ask Miles. We're in an office that has been converted into a very small apartment, and the building seems to be very low-key. It is Miles secret hideout; for when we need it.

I'm conversing with Miles now, but mainly to do with business. If I knew 100% that Miles was going to stay; I wouldn't be giving him the cold shoulder, but I keep waking up expecting Miles to be gone.

"I just need to convince Franklin to get on our side," Miles replies.

"Why do you sound like it's an almost impossible task?"

Miles shrugs, "Well I tried to kill him, back when Texas and the Monroe Republic were squabbling."

"Is war really the only way?"

"You've seen what they do. You know what they did. This is the only way."

I nod. I have no problem with spilling Patriot blood; it's the casualties that I'm worried about, all the innocent lives we're going to lose in this war. All the lives we've already lost to the patriots; it's too much.

"Ade . . ."

"Just stop Miles."

"He shakes his head, "I'm sick of the cold shoulder."

"I'm talking to you now."

"Barely, are you ever going to forgive me?"

"Are you talking about the time you threw me away and never once reached out, or are you talking about how you were going to ditch me all over again?" I ask.

"I'm sick of explaining myself. I've already told you; I thought I was doing the best thing for everyone."

"Whatever . . . just tell me what the plan is."

Miles sighs in frustration, "Fine . . . I talked to Fry today but he needs proof. I'm going to meet him tonight at an abandoned mill up the creek."

"I can't keep Jake in the dark about the Patriots Miles; not if you're about to start a war," I reply.

"The less he knows; the safer he is."

"You don't get to make that decision for me."

"You'll be putting his life in danger--" Miles starts.

"You don't know that for sure."

If tables were turned I would resent Jake for lying to me; whether it put my life in danger or not but then again if anything happened to Jake because he accidentally slipped up, it would end horrendously for him, and I would hate myself more than I already do now.

"Fine but I told you."

We make it over the fence and I unclip my rifle from my belt, and Jake does the same. We have to be ready for anything. Miles is going to kill me for coming out here, but I couldn't control myself.

I didn't plan on telling Jake about the Patriots; it kind of just slipped out beside he knows how to take care of himself, and the secret was bound to come out; it would've ruined us. Jake would've resented me for sure; he already does at the moment. The only reason he's by my side is because I snuck out breaking the Patriots rule, and he refused to let me go by myself.
