Chapter 4 – Riley Gray

I entered the classroom behind Riley. The room I was in was about the size of a college class room. In the classroom there was a teacher’s desk at the back and one at the front. There was a dry-erase board, that was covered with writing. There were also a lot of desks in the room but only half of them were filled. The walls were filled with posters for things like “Shakespear” and “Gone With The Wind” and “Wuthering Heights” and other famous works.

As we walked in heads turned, as they always do, toward us. The whispers started soon after. The professor looked up from the book he was reading aloud from.

“Sorry about this, Professor Galen. Didn’t mean to interrupt. Just escorting Miss Michaels here.” He gestured to me. I waved.

“Yes, yes. Take your seats now.” Prof. Galen looked back down to find his place before he continued reading. I walked to the back of the room and sat down. Of course, Riley came and sat right next to me.

“Why are you following me? You only have to show me to my classes.” I whispered.

He reached into his bag that he had been carrying, and he pulled out a book. “You don’t have your own copy yet. I’ll get you one after class. Prof. Galen hates interruptions. You can share with me for now.” He skooted his desk closer to mine. ‘Awesome. Why didn’t anyone tell me these things?’

“Whatever.” I looked at the book but wasn’t actually following along. I was thinking about what the Headmaster had said. Michael, the Commander of the Army of Angels? Me. His daughter. Mom definitely ‘neglected’ to tell me a lot.

Riley nudged me and I looked at him. He pointed with his eyes at a piece of paper on my desk. On it was scribbled handwriting. His scribbled handwriting.

Hi. –R” Was all he wrote.

I wrote back. “Why are you bothering me? –L” Then passed it back to him.

It’s fun. You’re funny. –R”

I sighed and wrote, “So you get a kick out of driving me crazy? –L”

Yes. But it’s only cause you remind me of someone. –R”

Ah, hell. It’s an old girlfriend isn’t it? –L”

He took the paper and hid it as Prof. Galen looked up and asked another student a question. When the student answered and the Prof. started reading again Riley read it then replied. “Kind of, not really. More like an old close friend. You’re just like her. –R”

I frowned at him then wrote, “Nice to know. Is she dead? –L”

No, but she might as well be. We don’t talk anymore. Why? –R”
